MUSIC EVENT IN SISSI - 7 AUGUST

Click on the poster to enlarge it. Here is one for the Greek class to translate. Basically it says that there will be a music event in Sissi on the 7th August, where local musicians (from Sissi and Vrahassi) will entertain. Though the poster does not say the time, I do believe that the programme will begin round about 9 p.m.

Jane Sharp at the Belvadere Hotel,Chersonissos, Crete.

I know I have neglected to write my blog for a few days, but my family arrived from England and it's been all go. After getting them settled in Sissi I took a day off today to visit the Belvedere Hotel in Chersonissos with my friend Pauline.

ITS NOT ALL MEATBALLS AND STUFFED VINE LEAVES!

David and I had a real treat in Ag Nik today. We ate the best grilled octopus that we've ever had, smoked duck and pear salad, and mushrooms with balsamic dressing. Then the fantastic puddings that you see. Yes, it was expensive, but it was our treat for all the hard work we have done over the past year. Of course, it is back to stuffed vine leaves tomorrow. Hey ho, probably much more healthy!
Two other things to mention: first my book is now on sale in the small bookshop in Sissi, and sencond, I received a telephone call from a member of the Sissi Cultural Committee, asking me to play cello at their musical event to be held in Sissi on 7th August (or 6th... or maybe 8th). Anyway the date will be decided soon. It promises to be a jolly evening with about twenty local musicians joining together to make a varied programme. Another little adventure for me and Valentino.
AND... Joanne and Jack and John arrive on Monday! Five sleeps to go. Cossies at the ready!

HORSEMAN OF VRAHASSI

Great galloping shepherds! And it's the dog barking, not hiccups. There we were minding our own (and we were on our own) business over a bottle of retsina, when David said, "Is that a horse I can hear." Don't be silly I told him, but as you can see, to my surprise it was.

WHAT A LOVELY BIRTHDAY!

David's present to me was the tiling of our kitchen - always the practical Yorkshirman! But then in the evening I was treated to a suprise party. Thank you my wonderful friends.

POLE DANCING NEVER USED TO BE LIKE THIS!

It's just amazing where that book gets to! A drop of the good stuff in Malia as we passed through after a spot of hospital visiting in Heraklion.
My friend went in for an MRI scan, but the machine had broken down with no sign of it being mended. After a couple of day's in pain, fixed to a drip and no nursing (as we know it) I gave her a bed bath and changed her nighty. Her husband got her to eat some yoghurt. She was in University hospital, and has now returned home to be cared for properly!

TRADITIONAL CRETAN TAVERNA

Kalo Mina everyone!
Sometimes it is good to get out of Vrahassi and try somewhere different to eat. The Athiboles (Cretan for 'memories') taverna in Latsida, is literally ten minutes drive from our house. Their menu offers fresh produce, local meats, Cretan appetisers and a hospitable environment.
True to their word, together with our half litre of wine we were treated to three little dishes as appetisers: olives, tomatoes and hot meat in delicious gravy. It was no more than a tablespoonful, but it took the edge off our hunger while we waited for our main meal to arrive. It is a pity that this tradition seems to be disappearing in Vrahassi, I realize that there are economic reasons, or is it that computer games are more important than customers? Whatever, the little taverna just down the road is a delightful place to eat - and they serve delicious icecream too. Our meal, without icecream, cost us 15 euro: meat, chips, a very fresh, crisp salad and half a litre of wine. Excellent value, lovely surroundings and happy memories. Thank you Manolis and Sophia.
