AND SO THAT WAS CHRISTMAS!

It's Saturday, the street is quiet, the light is an unsettled grey and the trees round my deserted pergola across from the bar are sort of shaking in the breeze. David is at home working on our new bathroom ready for Cindy and Pete to move in to and I have a few minutes before my friend Jayne arrives for our regular Saturday get together. The bar needs cleaning from last night and then, hopefully, I will be back in the office to catch up with my work of promoting the walks for the Spring.

George, meanwhile is out in the fields working his little legs off.

Back later, Jane x

CHRISTMAS EVE

Christmas Eve folks and I am sure that you will all be too busy to read my blog. Tell the truth I am too busy to write it, but I just want you to know that it is Lydia and Mark's wedding anniversary today and they invite you all to come and have a drink with them at the bar tonight. (First drink on Mark and Lydia). So come and help them celebrate 13 years' together. Let's make Christmas Eve Jolly, there will be nosh to help the drink down (buffet style).

And... if you can't make it to share in the fun then from David and me, have a very merry Christmas and a Happy New Year.

Love and Peace to all.

(Just a quick note to say that Manolis, in the village slaughtered 3 pigs the other day but unfortunately cut his leg very badly - I think OK now. The pigs meanwhile didn't make it and George, having ordered about half of one is very happy. So, it's pork all the way on Boxing Day.)

And best news ever, the rain has stopped and the sun is shining. I think the full moon has something to do with it. Dave and I went to the cava this morning and stocked up with booze and Neapolis was very festive with the brass band wandering the streets playing Christmas songs. Vrahassi is very quiet so I will go and put some music on and open the windows. It is not quite Time Square at night but we do have a few festive lights.

See ye later!
Love Jane (and David, and George)
HO! HO! HO!

RUNNING AROUND THE CHRISTMAS TREE!

I watched Superman on the tele' last night and I must say that I wish I could be in two places at once just at the moment, in fact I feel as though I almost am. My feet barely touch the ground before I have to move on. The Choir concert went extremely well and we raised just over 500 euro for our Choir Fund. That was way over what we expected but it wasn't surprising as the Rex Theatre was full to capacity with several people having to stand. What a fantastic turn out. The children who sang at the beginning of the concert were marvelous and most people stayed on afterwards to enjoy the mulled wine and home made goodies (my chocolate cake turned out OK despite running out of icing sugar).

So, that over it was on to the next. Sunday was a bit of a rush but we managed to get to the Xmas market in Xersonisos on time and, after a short sound practice we performed about a third of the programme, in the open air in the midst of happy 'bazaar' shoppers.

And then... David took me out for an evening in Heraklion. My Xmas treat. Maybe it was because it was Sunday, and maybe it was because it was a bit too soon before Xmas, but the streets of Heraklion were very quiet and not too sparkly, though there were a few Xmas lights. We walked about the bar area and settled in a quite lively place for an drink before dinner, then we went in search of a restaurant. Do you know, we could not find one. Well, we did see a French restaurant but it didn't look too inviting. There were several fast food places but we wanted something special, you know, candles on the table, romantic. Ah well, it wasn't to be so we got back in the old Samauri and headed towards the port area, now extremely hungry as we had not eaten anything since our morning slice of toast.

But as it happened all turned out well, very well in fact. We found a wonderful pizzeria in the new Talos Plaza. It was packed, full, full, with never an empty table the whole time we were there. The noise of cackling customers was great, everybody enjoying themselves, mostly Greek people creating a wonderful atmosphere. The food was good, the service exceptional and the wine (OK we pushed the boat out with a Lirarakis Syrah/Kotsafali 05 at 28 euro) was worth every cent. I don't want to stop this flourish of praise, however, yes there was a 'however' (but it might just be that I am out of touch and a little fuddy-duddy) however, the wine glasses (which I suppose very seldom break) were in fact, ice-cream sundae glasses, but we laughed and said, 'well it is Sunday,' and we had a really good night.

Then there was Monday... George and I had decided that Monday would be the only day that we could go and see Violetta in the orphanage in Heraklion, so we set off early calling first at the bank in Sissi to cash a small 'olive' cheque from last year's work. With a few hundred euro in his pocket Georgie Baby had a smile on his face and we headed once again for the big city. Marks and Spencer's wasn't Littlelegs' scene so I left him in a coffee shop while I had a look around. There was nothing that I couldn't live without so that didn't take long. I did a bit of Xmas shopping on my way back to the coffee shop, had a quick glass of white wine (just to be sociable) and arm in arm dragged the protesting George to the Body Shop. "I don't like cities with all these people," George announced so after the Body Shop, and because we thought the best time to see Violetta would be after 3 p.m., I said, 'come on, I'll show you this place where we can get a brandy and a piece of cake'. What a great idea that was. It was a small coffee shop that David and I had passed on Sunday night and we thought at the time that it looked quite unique. The name was Utopia and that's where we found ourselves for the next hour or so - utopia! I think the photo should say it all but if you don't get the gist, spread out in front of us was a feast of chocolate. We had dark chocolate fondue with profiteroles, pineapple, banana, biscuits and bits of this and that to dip into the warm, velvety, orgasmic-y chocolate (which at 2 in the afternoon ain't half bad). Oh, yummy, yummy! Even Littlelegs with his bad teeth and avoidance of all things sweet, could not resist a tiny taste of 'Utopia'.

We got to the orphanage just after 3 p.m. in a very mellow mood only to be greeted (or I should say 'not greeted' really) by a very official woman who told us in no uncertain terms that we could only see Violetta by appointment. Well that didn't go down too well but what could we do? We were laden with a bag of presents for the poor girl whom we thought might like to know that someone was thinking about her but despite our protest that we had come a long way and that the woman who was there before had told us to 'come any time', we were not allowed to see her. Anyway I asked what was a good time and was told between 6 and 7 so I asked if we could make an appointment to see the girl between 6 and 7 later that evening. 'Yes', was the reply. Ok, so we had 3 hours to kill. George had heard about this place way up in the mountains towards Anoyia, that is famous for its spit roast pork and seeing as I had had my treat with the chocolate then I thought it only fair to go along with what George wanted to do. So, that's what we did. We headed out of Heraklion, found this place, ate a huge amount of pig and returned to the orphanage where we were asked to wait. We waited 30 minutes only to be told that Violetta was out and that she would not be back until after 8 p.m. There was a lot of huffing and puffing but again, what could we do? We left the presents and asked that they be given to the child. I only hope she does in fact receive them. So, even though our day was delightful, it was disappointing and such a shame for Violetta who missed out on a bit of friendly warmth this Christmas.

Band practice yesterday brought me crashing down to earth with the panicky realization that I had not learned my solo parts and the words are still a bit 'iffy'. I went to sleep last night trying to memorise 'Rudolf the red nose reindeer' which I have sung wrong all my life. It will be all right on the night.

And the night is ... This Saturday Aghhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh! Fellow members of the band said: 'What do you mean, 'live, well sort of'? So, put in my place I can tell you well and truly that the band is very 'Live' (and what's more, very good). So come along on Saturday night for a piece of the action.

Now, just in case I don't manage the odd blog before Xmas let me wish you all a very merry Christmas and a happy, healthy and very wonderful New Year. If you are in Vrahassi over the Christmas holiday, do pop in to the Revolution Bar to say 'hello'.

To all my Greek readers, 'ΚΡΟΝΙΑ ΠΟΛΛΑ' 'ΚΑΛΑ ΧΡΙΣΤΟΥΓΕΝΝΑ'
and a HAPPY CHRISTMAS to all.

And wherever you may be this Christmas, may Peace reign and the Light shine all around you. (And remember - smile, be happy and be 'nice' to everyone you meet, it always bounces back ten fold).

HOLE IN ONE!

YES RESULT! The hole has been filled in.

Now, as I am singing with the choir at the Rex at Ag Nik tonight at 7.30 (I invite you to come along) I shall be closing the bar at 3 this afternoon and not opening until tomorrow. And... as I am singing with the choir again tomorrow at 5 in Xersonissos, then there will be NO SUNDAY LUNCH tomorrow and the bar will close again at 3 p.m. Sorry about that folks but I'll make up for it with MINCE PIES next Saturday at the CHRISTMAS MUSIC EVENING (Live band, well sort 0f).

Must push on now got to clean up the bar after last night.

George is now OK - scooter undamaged.

Hello John in London, that boy of yours sure is a wonderful child. Looking forward to seeing you all next year. Give our love to you Mum, Dad and family, hope you have a wonderful Christmas.

No I am not a real estate agent, I simply have information about village houses and land which I pass on as requested.

Talk soon,
Love Jane x

LITTLE LEGS IN A SPIN!

My poor Little Legs! Yesterday he came off his scooter on the old road at Selinari. The first I knew about it was when two village lads came to the bar to see if I had heard anything. I hadn't but got on the phone straight away. George was in an ambulance heading for Ag Nik hospital. At least he was speaking, that was a good start. Well, it could have been a lot worse, he got away with a few scratches, his face is badly bruised and I dare say his swollen wrist and aching neck will get stiffer before it gets better. He wouldn't stay in the hospital ( probably because he couldn't smoke) and has just been to the bar for coffee. He's not a pretty site, all puffed up and a couple of teeth missing. I've dabbed a bit of savlon on his grazes and he's gone off to thank the guy who called the ambulance. I think he did well to get out of bed this morning especially as it was pouring with rain. Now he is sitting under Lefteris pergola with Papa Yeorgos and another guy, I think the company will help him.

I have ordered my Christmas booze so that will come today. The band will arrive about 3.30 p.m. and I have a few letters to write. It is now 11.30 a.m. It is our son's birthday on Sunday so I want to sort him a present. I am really missing the family this Christmas, roll on February when we can all be together.

Such good news about my Grandson, Jack. He wrote a poem at school which his teacher thought was so good that she sent it to be included in a book of children's poetry. Out of thousands of entries, my Jack's poem was chosen and yesterday Jo rang to tell me and to read out the letter of acceptance, so, how about that, in print with a poem he wrote when he was four years old. I cannot wait to get a copy of the book. Joanne had no idea that he was writing the poem, when I asked her she told me that he had been going around the house saying things that rhymed but he didn't say anything about school. What a great surprise.

I have to make a chocolate cake for the table of refreshments that we are serving at the Carol Concert in the Rex Cinema on Saturday (15th Dec). It starts at 7.30 and we are looking forward to a good crowd. There will be mulled wine and a taste of Christmas.

The Christmas Sing Along at the Revolution Bar, Vrahassi, will be held on Saturday 22nd December from 7.30 p.m. which should be a real Spirit Lifter in the run up to Christmas. Please take this as an invitation to come and join us. We shall be making music and singing all those Christmas Favourites. Our own little band 'JARVIS' will be making it's debut and we are wired for sound.

And... don't forget we shall be open on Christmas Eve from 11 a.m. Christmas Day until 3 p.m. and Boxing Day till late so come and have a Christmas Drink and a piece of Christmas Cake with us. Oh, and if you want Champagne there will be plenty of that too!

Byzee - Bye for now,
Jane from a very damp Vrahassi.

(...and the hole in the road is still a hole in the road - just in case you were wondering).

IT'S SHOW TIME IN VRAHASSI!

It's just after four in the afternoon and I have been rehearsing with members of our newly formed band 'JARVIS' since 11.30 this morning. My head is buzzing with chords for 'Rocking around the Christmas tree,' and I think it is time for a cup of hot chocolate.

I jumped on the scales this morning feeling sure that I was a little thinner, but sadly not. Well, at least my weight is constant. (Think I will have a chocolate biscuit as well).

The first snow is on the mountain opposite Vrahassi and it was very cold yesterday. Today is brighter but more rain is forecast for tomorrow.

Though I don't really want to get involved with the workings of the world, especially here in Vrahassi, people do keep asking me to 'ask the council...' this and that. The latest request is for Street names in Vrahassi. Maybe when I have a minute after Christmas I will ask someone about it.

My new neighbours have been trying to get a telephone line into their house for three weeks, they want an Internet connection, but it don't bode well when they can't even get a telephone.

Whoopee, Hooray! My Christmas tree is in situ in the bar twinkling away as we speak and very festive the whole place looks too. Unfortunately the rain took out some of the street illuminations that the council had put up including the ones that were on the lamp post outside the bar, and the swinging bells opposite have disappeared too, maybe they will send an electrician to mend them.

And... the hole in the road outside my front door has not yet been filled in. (Just a comment).

I went down to Sisi to the opening of the new Irish Bar on Thursday night it was good to get dressed up a bit and chat to people I hadn't seen for a while. I was back for before twelve (I always have this fear of turning into a pumpkin) and left the bar in full swing. Yesterday I heard that there had been some trouble later on and the new owner had had his windows smashed. Not a good start.

So, back in quiet Vrahassi I will live with my easy, easy life, and be very grateful that my clientele is of a more genteel nature, though George does upset the equilibrium from time to time, (he is prone to burn holes in my tablecloths) but I wouldn't be without him.

I am thinking about my Grandchildren in the run up to Christmas and wish that I could be with them just now. School nativity plays, concerts, parties, visiting Father Christmas, all the excitement, all the expectation. Hopefully David and I will have a day out in Heraklion next week to taste the magic of Christmas. Meanwhile the bar is looking very Christmas-y, it is warm and Jingle Bells lifts the spirit.

On that note then (...jingle all the way) I'll leave you for the weekend. Have a pleasant one, and if our paths should cross before Christmas so much the better. With only two weeks to go my advice is: Think happy thoughts and trust in the power of the Universe... and, with just a little effort, all will be well with your world and Father Christmas will squeeze his way down your chimney.

My wish is for peace everywhere,
Lots of Love from Vrahassi x

TALKING OF RAINBOWS

'Somewhere under the Rainbow...'
What a wonderful start to my day, a rainbow over Vrahassi. Of course the heavens opened and it tippled down about five minutes after this shot but that's life.

I'm off to Neapolis soon to pick up plans for a house that is sold, then I shall take them to the Solicitor in Agios. After that I may just pop in on the INCO meeting before choir practice at 4 p.m. I will be back to open the bar at 6.30 p.m. and hopefully put the Christmas tree up and some decorations.

George and other people from Vrahassi who were involved in the political fight for the reinstatement of the Council, have gone to Xania today where they are to appear in Court. This has been going on for a few years' now, I think it is some sort of probation. Every time they go they get another date in the future to return, it seems to be about every 6 months or so. Every time George goes he says they may put him in prison but I don't see that happening at all.

I am so cold now (no heat in the office) that my fingers are beginning to show signs of frostbite (OK a slight exaggeration) but it is chilly so I will finish here and go to make a cup of hot chocolate.

Just a quick 'Hello' Yvonne, sorry to hear about the back - shall we campaign for a ski lift up the mountain so that you can get to your house more easily?

And 'Hello' to all my readers wherever you are, have a good day! Byeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee!

SHOPPING THERAPY IN VRAHASSI

The 'Bring and Buy' sale went very well and we raised just over 100 euro for the 'Flowers of Crete' fund. Today I received a mail from Julia to say that the money will pay the fees for Flowers of Crete's membership of PlantaEuropa for 2008. So, a big thank you to all who helped to make the day a success. The winner of the Christmas Cake was Brian (wife Gill) of Kounali, and the Christmas Pud went to Christine of Gouves. Our next event at the bar will be on Saturday 22nd Dec when you are invited to come and spend a night of Christmas Music. We shall be singing carols and making music. If you would like to join us please bring along your instrument for a 'Christmas Jam'. The Revolution Bar's own band will be making its debut performance and we are practicing hard at the mo, (no rotten tomatoes please!).

But... before then, on Saturday, 15th Dec., at the Rex Cinema in Ag Nik, the Rainbow Choir will be giving its annual Carol Concert. It will begin at 7.30 p.m. with refreshment served in the foyer. This will be a real taste of Christmas so come and enjoy the evening.
