Lydia and I have just finished decorating the bar for tonight's party. It's great, just the food to prepare now. Thanks Yvonne for sending all that spooky geer, the skeleton is my favourite and the flashing door cover. Vrahassi is so quiet I doubt that anyone has seen the weird decor and don't know what Little legs will make of it when he arrives tonight. Anyway, I am getting in the mood with scary music and bat noises. Ooooooooooooooooooh! Oooooooooooooooooh! Watch this space for SCARY CRETAN MOVIE 2.
Who was it said, it helps to be a little Crazy?
Got to go now and DRESS TO KILL...
IT'S H A L L O W E E EEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE N!
I hope your's will be as spooky as mine:
Baa, Baa, Black Crete(ans),
Have you any Ghoul,
Yes Sir, Yes Sir, three bars full,
One for the Shepherds and one for the Lame,
And one for the woman who drives us all insane.
Happy Halloween to all souls!

REAL ESTATE
I have just had the pleasure of meeting Mr Lambros Klatsias who runs Melissa Properties, a real estate business based at Agia Varvara nr Sisi. He called into the Revolution Bar for a coffee with a client and whilst chatting he informed me of his building work. New villas going up which are Architect designed, and from the sound of things, super properties and at the right price. There are so many people coming to live in Crete now, and they are not the Hippie brigade who start Cretan life, as I did, in a tent. The sophisticated buyer of today demands high standards and Melissa Properties appears to offer just that. To find out for yourself, take a look at Mr Lambros' site.
http://www.melissa-properties.com/
But, if you prefer a humble dwelling in the most Cretan village of all i.e. Vrahassi, then look at:
http://cretehouseshop.blogspot.com/ for people on a more modest budget.
Whichever type of property you are looking for I shall be happy to show you around when you come house hunting in Crete. Please allow me to be your personal guide to find a home that is just right for you. I look forward to being of assistance. Jane.
(Well that was all very formal wasn't it?) What I really want you to know is that, from the little space of my mountain village office in Vrahassi I can offer a very friendly and efficient service to help you find a house or a piece of land for sale in the area. My e-mail is: janesharp_crete@hotmail.com if you want to know more just drop me a line.
And... now I am off to Greek class in Ag Nik. Byeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee, Jane

SCARY VRAHASSI
I am looking forward to tomorrow's Halloween Party. Lydia and I will be decorating the bar and getting ready for a spooky night of fun. This will be a first for Vrahassi and I am not quite sure what the locals will make of it. Anyway we shall see.
If you would like to come and join us we shall be open till late (at least the bewitching our). Bring your pointy hat, warts and all.
Meanwhile I have to clean the bar. Once that is done I can report on yesterday's day off. So, more later...

SAD SUNDAY!
I have just come back from the funeral of Marianne, a fellow member of the Rainbow Choir who sadly died last week. The service was very moving and the choir sang a couple of pieces, Ave Verum and Peace like a river. It was so difficult to hold back the tears but we sang OK (I think). Marianne was only 55 and it really brings it home to you how brief this life is. I'm back in the office now just in time for darkness to settle on Vrahassi.
Day off tomorrow and George and I have an appointment to visit Maria who used to run Lefteris Cafeneon in Vrahassi. Then we are going out for dinner with our friends Gavin and Rosemarie. So, I'd better open the bar now, and get ready to feed everyone.
I had a super lie in this morning with the clocks going back last night.
Bye for now...

PHOTO'S OF WEEK BEG. 22ND OCTOBER
Somebody is moving into Vrahassi.I'M BACK!
It hasn't been an easy few days but I've finally got my jobs done and can sit and relax for 5 minutes. So, what can I tell you in 5 mins.
First of all Monday - Monday I went to Heraklion, the mission, to see Violetta, the young girl who was taken in to an orphanage there. When we arrived she was at school so we (that is Little Legs and I) left a box of chocolates and our best wishes. I was sorry not to see her and we shall try again in a couple of weeks' time. Then the heavens opened and there was an absolute deluge right over Heraklion. The roads very quickly became flooded as I drove towards Carrefour. It was a quick shopping trip and then a hot chocolate whilst waiting for the rain to ease a little. We headed out to Skalani (where I used to teach English) for a jug of wine and mezedes. Welcome to the real world George - we were charged for the little plates of food about 2 euro a plate. It has been a hard battle persuading George that food cannot be given away, even so I do know some places that do, but they can't be making money. Another example of this was when someone came into the bar last night and asked for a litre of raki to take out. Now I only had a 750 cl empty water bottle for which I asked the price 3.5 euro. He turned his nose up at it, saying that he could get it at the corner shop cheaper. You can guess my reply? A 750 cl bottle contains 6 or 7 little carafes of raki which sell at 1.50 each. So at that price it would be about 10 euro, my extremely good offer of 3.50 euro therefore was good and not at all unreasonable. He bought a carafe to drink at the bar with meze for 2 euro, and seemed happy that he had given me grief over the price of the 750cl bottle. There you go!
Monday night we spent in Ag Nik at the solicitor's office with clients who are buying a house.
Tuesday (Chili) - I rushed off in the morning to do some shopping and got back to open the bar just in time to greet Mark and Lydia back from England. How good it was to see them, cheerful as ever.
Wednesday (Chicken) - Choir practise at Ag Nik. It went well and I was glad I had made the effort to join again. There was also sad news in that a past member of the choir had slipped into a coma after a few months of battling with cancer. She is not expected to live and it was decided that we should prepare some of her favourite songs to sing at her funeral. When we started to sing after that most of us were in tears.
Mark and Lydia came round for dinner and to bring the goodies that I had asked for from England: a new black skirt, a top to wear in the bar, some spices for my curries etc and a bag full of weird and wonderful stuff to decorate the place with on Halloween.
Thursday (Lamb) - A quick trip to Neapolis to pay the Accountant, my OGA (insurance), the telephone bill (ouch!) and whiz round the Spar supermarket for supplies. Back at the ranch a sweep up of the bar, tables cleaned, toilet cleaned and all ready for the Greek class at 2 p.m.
Greek class over and people on Internet in office. Time to prepare dinner (roast lamb and veggies) and the first people arrived at the bar. A quick wash and change of clothes for evening and candles lit. Whoa! And there goes another day.
Friday (Fish) - Although I have bought liver for David, George and me, we need the B vits to keep us sane. 9. 30 and it was off to Ag Nik again for another choir practice, an extra to prepare for the funeral. Next, collected long strips of wood at the wood yard, for David and with a foot or so (of wood that is) hanging out of the back of the old Samauri, I went into the middle of town to find a parking spot and go to the Solicitor with information from a seller. I was just there at the right time to see the cubs and scouts parading for OCHI DAY, which of course, is today.
So, Happy Ochi Day everyone especially those of you who are called Dimitri (Xronia Polla) as it is your name day (out with the cakes).
I hope that brings everybody up to day with the wonderful world of Jane Guevara. Oh, one more thing, when we saw furniture being transported up the hill towards our house on Tuesday, we thought that someone had bought the house next to ours and that they were moving in. Well, the furniture has gone in but no sight of people so maybe the owner of the house is going to let it.
After Monday's rain we have had a wonderfully warm week, autumn sunshine which is so good for the bones. Speaking of which, 'foot' is really on the mend now and I'm almost ready for a good walk.
SLIMMING CLUB - I have bought the scales and have got my blood pressure machine at the ready. At the moment we shall meet on a Saturday morning at 11 a.m. (That's you and me Jayne) but open to suggestions for another day and time.
And last but not least - don't forget next Wednesday night is Halloween and we shall be having a party. Fancy Dress optional. Spooky food and Spooky Drink. Enter if you Dare!

WE LOST!
Oops! England lost the match to South Africa and we lost our Nova signal (only ten minutes to go before the end). What a blow, it must have been due to the thunderstorm and heavy rain. Anyway, we got to see most of the game so things were not so bad.
I woke up this morning to voices from next door. Good grief! We have neighbours. People have moved in to the house next to us, the one we call the Titanic because it has a corner of the house that looks like a side view of the bows of a ship. I haven't met them yet but they seem to be Greek, or maybe Bulgarian.
It is 11.30 p.m. and I have just closed the bar. George and I watched the Sunday film 'Poseidon' which I thought was good but not quite as tear jerking as the old version with Shelley Winters. I have one or two things to sort out for tomorrow and then it is back home and hopefully a good night's sleep. I am meeting George at 9 a.m. to go to Heraklion to see Violetta (the young girl from the village who is in an orphanage). We said that we would go once a month. I have an appointment with the Solicitor in Ag Nik at 7.00 p.m. tomorrow with house buyers and then we shall go out for dinner. Jolly dee - a Monday spree!
Thank goodness I managed to get through to Joanne, I have tried all week and not caught her in, unfortunately Jack was with his other Grandma so I missed talking to him. Anyway Jo tells me that she went to her first Parent/Teachers' meeting last week and there was nothing but praise for young Jack, so I am feeling very proud of our little Grandson. Our two Granddaughters are also good students, long may it continue.
I seem to have upset Gerald of Brits in Crete. He has left a message on my post about the Water Bills, well most of the people that I know have paid without a bill, we did get a receipt though. I do hope that my Blog does not start to be a 'bicker machine'!
Got to go now, important things to do - like sleep. Night, night.

GREEK LESSON
It was a strange Greek Lesson today - Papa Nikos called in at the office on his way to the cemetery, he was going to officiate at the funeral service of Mr Dennis Pollington who lived at Apano Sissi and who sadly died of a heart attack a few days ago. Anyway, I thought it only right that I should go, A to see if I could be of any help to Mrs Pollington and B as representative for the English community on the Council. I am so glad that I went. Funerals can be beautiful things if you look at them in the right light. Mr Pollington was obviously loved and will be greatly missed by all who knew him. Following a short, Orthodox service, Julie, his daughter, spoke some wonderful words before the coffin was carried to the grave. There, a very dignified burial ceremony was performed and Mr Pollington was laid to rest, God bless him. My heart went out to Carol who had lost her partner, but she was surrounded by friends who I am sure will look after her.
Meanwhile, back at the ranch, my Greek class students were beavering away on a translation of 'The Three Muskateers'. When I got back we all had a drink and a natter.
Last night was 'Lamb' night and I made traditional lamb and beans. Put the flag out! A complement from George, who said it was the first time that I had produced real Greek food. There you go. Tonight it is 'fish' night but I shall not be cooking it Greek style. No it is Friday night 'Fish and Chips' with mushy peas to make it a real English treat.
And next week I shall be putting plans together for my Halloween Party on the 31st October - which is on a Wednesday (Chicken night), that makes it easy, 'spooky chicken' a la Jane. And don't forget the FANCY DRESS - a prize for the weirdest costume.
Just a quick thanks to Ilias for the info about your family I am looking forward to meeting you next time you are in Vrahassi. I shall try to keep village photo's coming. As I write there seems to be some sort of shouting match going on at the cafenieon across the road (but nothing new there, eh?).
Bye for now, Jane x

BLACK OUT
Sometimes it is good to have a candle lit bar! Last night there was a blackout when something went wrong with the electricity supply at Stalis. We were in darkness for about half an hour, no light, no television, it was great, very romantic with only the crescent moon above the Lassithiotika Mountains casting a soft light over the olive groves.
Thanks for your message (there can be only one) telling me that both your father and grandfather attended the old school which I photographed recently. I am very interested in the history of Vrahassi and would love to know the name of your grandfather who was at one time 'Mayor' of Vrahassi. What do you think to the idea of restoring the old school and perhaps making it into a visitor center of some sort with information about Anavlohos and the Village of Vrahassi through the ages? George says that is impossible, I don't like the word 'impossible', so it could be a future project. There could be a gallery for old photographs etc. and the building is worthy of keeping in good repair. Maybe there is a European Grant for such a project. George sends his best wishes to you and your family.
I have enrolled at the school in Ag Nik for Greek Lessons. I feel that it is time I made an extra push even though my Greek has come on no end since I began working with George. The problem is that although George speaks Greek, (well I think he does) there are points of grammar which he cannot explain to me. The lessons in Ag Nik are free so no problem there. I will just have to find 5 hours a week to attend classes.
Choir practise this morning went well. The bar is quiet now so I have decided to carry on with the Rainbow Choir which I have been a member of for the past two years. I love to sing with the choir. We really need new members so if there is anyone out there who likes to sing (even if you don't read music) then contact me and I will tell you about rehearsals, where and when.
My mobile phone is: 6945872472 Ring me if you are interested.
Got to go now, football starts soon and I have to wash up and clean the bar. There is a little news which I suppose I should report. An Englishman has died in Apano Sisi but I don't have the name, and, also in Apano Sisi there was an attempt to blow up a house (dynamite on the doorstep I believe). Now, as I am not the News of the World I don't have the full story, you will have to find out for yourselves.
OK, time to get the mop out...

WATER BILL PAYMENT
Way up on the Kathero Plateau above Kritsa we found Jannis, another Che fan.Yesterday was my day off folks, whoopee, yeehah! I LOVE MONDAYS! And what did I do? Well, first of all I cleaned up the bar after Sunday night. Then I caught up with a few blog pics and answered my mail. After that it was down to the council offices to pay my water bills. I say bills as I have house water, land water, and bar water. The total was about 30 euros so it didn't break the bank. If you haven't paid your water bill (there are no bills issued yet so you just have to go and pay and they cross you off the list - and I should add that there are quite a few Brits who have not paid yet) then simply go to the office where the old school in Vrahassi was, and pay. It may be that your meter has not been read or you may not even be on the list but come on, we are British, so own up.
Anyway after that I went (or should I say we as Littlelegs likes his Monday off too) down to Neapolis to pay my mobile phone bill and to buy David a new one as over the past few months he has struggled with his old phone, even having to operate the thing with a key or pen nib because the front of it had dropped off and smashed. I got him the cheapest (as per instructions) one I could find which cost me 30 euros from Cosmote. Not bad eh!
The plan was to go from there to shop at Lidle but by now it was 1 p.m. and we were hungry so we decided to find a cafeneon in the hills and eat, which we did about 1 hour later and way up on the Kathero Plateau above Kritsa. There we discovered a certain dive of a place, slightly hippie, a sort of hikers hovel run by Yannis who was an amazingly educated loner with long hair and Che Guevara baseball cap. Not only that but he had a huge red Che flag hung in his bar together with other Che objet d'art and he produced a superb book of the life of Che with fantastic photo's inside. "I heard about your bar" he said with a twinkle in his eye, "but I was the first". I didn't dispute that saying "I don't mind being number 2". So a bond was created between two Che fans and out came the raki. Oh dear, shopping at Lidle's seemed a long way away. We did, however, escape having tasted the local wine and a plate of lamb and beans at the Taverna next door to Yanni's place. Coming down the mountain didn't take us as long as going up and we were soon browsing the isles of Lidle where I bought a pair of weighing scales so that I can check my weight every week from now on (more of that later).
The day was by no means over. Next we went to Ag Nik especially to go to a new shop which has opened selling cheap clothing. I bought a couple of woollies and George bought a flaming orange jacket to wear on his silver dream machine.
We arrived back in Vrahassi about 6 p.m. just in time wash, change and head into the night. George went off to Cosmos to sleep of a couple of hours and David and I went out to Latsida for a change of scene.
It was a great Monday off and I got all my little jobs out of the way. So, now I am heading into Tuesday, the sun is shining after all that rain of Sunday night and yesterday's cloud, and it is back to cleaning the cafe bar again.
It is just 10 a.m. Little legs has gone to the land that he is clearing, David is working on Ian and Diana's house and main street Vrahassi is quiet - wonderful!

A BUSY OCTOBER

A week of visitors and a busy cafe bar. On our walk around the village we met Georgos who kindly posed for a shot with us on the road up to 'Platanos' the very famous, and I stress famous restaurant in Vrahassi. In the middle of the summer the Queen of Jordan and her entourage came here to eat. Of course, local people have known for years that Elaine and Yannis produce the best food in the area, and probably the bast stifado in the world. I have a soft spot for the place because it is where David and I found our house and made the deal to buy it.
Then Ray arrived of Hidden Crete, I had to leave George to entertain him because I was dead on my feet and needed to get some sleep before the evening session.

When Lorraine and Barbara suddenly appeared at my window, I was shocked to tears. I haven't seen them for 4 years and had no idea that they were coming. They stayed in Sissi and we had lots of laughs learning about what had happened in their lives since we last saw them. In between it all Jill passed by with Steve and a couple of their friends, we never got to the window I think by that time I had had a glass of champagne or two and was a bit giggly.

SERVICE WITH A SMILE

I only popped in for petrol but got the full works at a garage just outside Ag Nik. Thanks for checking my oil chaps.

FUNERAL FRENZY
Phew! That was a day! And it's not over yet!
I was getting too complacent slowly plodding my way through the day, when a veritable crowd descended on me from the funeral of poor old Jannis Souladakis. (For those who may know have known him he had sons Nicko, Georgo, and Dimitris and I believe a daughter too). He was 77 and had a stroke, two or three days later he died.
It is usual for the relatives to say if they are coming back to a cafeneon but in this case they tell me they forgot and after the funeral nearly 50 people flocked in under the pergola and ordered Greek coffee. It's a real bugger to make all those coffees and I nearly ran out of cups but I did it. Littlelegs arrived half way through and did a bit of serving for me thank goodness.
Then I had Greek class and more customers. Then I had to bottle up. David had to go to the cava, I had to cook dinner for tonight "LAMB" and so there was no closing 5 - 7 today. Now my friends have arrived from England and I am frantically trying to finish the washing up ready for a good night in the bar tonight. What a day!
So bear with me if you have not got photo's today, I will be up early tomorrow to go and buy fish for tomorrow night, so hopefully will be able to get pics on the blog.
I'm off now to entertain, talk later,

DIMOS VRAHASSIOU?

Get a load of this! What will happen next? Did we breathe too soon? As my fellow Vrahassian said: 'Get the black paint ready.'
Please click on the above article to learn more of the Governments' proposals.

NEW IMPROVED VRAHASSI
History in the making! The graffiti has been removed from the old council office building, new doors and windows have been fitted, the inside has new wiring and has been painted and today the outside is being done. All signs of the eight year struggle to retain the office has been obliterated. Meanwhile in the cafe bar underneath the office, things have also changed. Sofia and Nikos have left and Yannis has installed a 'football' game. The good food seems to have disappeared along with Sophia and there is talk of a
change of ownership.And... I AM HAVING TO COOK! It's my fate I suppose, and I don't
mind really, it just means I have less time for my writing and other things at the moment. David is very happy, and so is George because they know that they are going to get a good hot meal every night. I have resolved to make a 'one pot' dinner every evening, first come, first served. Tonight as usual it isCURRY NIGHT, tomorrow, Sunday, it is STIFADO, Monday is my day off, Tuesday is CHILI, Wednesday CHICKEN AND CHIPS, Thursday LAMB IN THE OVEN and Friday FISH N' CHIPS.
So, come and eat at Jane Guevara's the ONE POT SHOP! It's cheap, it's cheerful and it's REVOLUTIONARY!
And here's another revolutionary - Dimitris of SERVICELAND. His company began very humbly in a small office in Vrahassi. Now he has a huge shop in Sisi where you can get all your hardware supplies. Not only that Dimitris is a top qualified electrician who, together with his Serviceland Team, offers a service, second to none where house repairs or renovations are concerned. His number is on the van. (And if you are looking for insurance then Androniki, his wife, will be more than willing to help you, you will find her in the shop where she has a separate insurance office). Now it is 12 noon and because the rugby (England v Australia) is on this afternoon at 4 p.m. and we are having a crowd round to watch it, I don't think anyone will turn up for the Table Top Sale, so I haven't put it out. However I may do it later.
So, it's all go today, I have just come back from Malia, shopping. Must go and sort out the bar. Vrahassi has seen the morning rush and is settling in for a lazy afternoon.
Ooh forgot to mention the extraordinary council meeting that was called very quickly on Tuesday evening, the details I have are very sketchy but it was to do with a Shepherd fight about land up by the water factory. Someone is in Heraklion hospital but I don't know who. It was to do with grazing land being sold for a hotel development. I don't seem to be able to get to the bottom of it - maybe it is a bit sensitive for 'blog' news. The meeting was called in anger I think, something about banishing the said shepherd from Vrahassi area. Anyway, if you are reading this, ex Vrahassians then your family may know the full story.
This is Jane Guevara for 'Blog News' reporting from Vrahassi, Crete.

ANAVLOHOS WALKS

They did it without me! David and Mark led a small party up to the ancient site on Anavlohos on Thursday. I stayed back and rested my foot (ho, ho,) no peace for the wicked. I made refreshments for their return and prepared Greek class, then we all sat under the pergola and enjoyed a get together; walkers, students, drinkers and Greek farmers.Wednesday, October 03, 2007

ANAVLOHOS LECTURE
I have a walk going up there on Thursday if anyone is interested. David and Mark will guide this time but hopefully 'foot' will be completely better very soon.
I couldn't help noticing the fully decorated Christmas tree on the platform. Early or late? I think just 'ever ready'. I also noticed a small 'no smoking' sign on the wall, could this be the beginning?
