BACK IN THE OFFICE

Well I'm back in the office trying to get 'ship shape' before I leave. One or two loose ends to tie up before I lock up for a week.

David paid a few bills this morning for me while I was getting my blood results. The good news is that they proved negative for Arthritis. The bad is that I am still in pain (though if I don't walk anywhere I'm not) and there was such a huge cue at the hospital, people sitting about in wheel chairs with legs in plaster, in fact plaster casts all over the place that I hobbled out on my crutches and decided to rest while I'm on holiday, do as much 'self healing' as I can and see how I am when I return. At least I know it's not GOUT (and don't laugh).

CRUISE COUNTDOWN

2 DAYS TO GO AND COUNTING!

No! 21st Century hits Vrahassi!

What's going on. Such activity as never. Little Post Men rushing about all over the place, if it's not 'electric men' it's 'post it' men...
And...
What have they left behind, one here, one there, lurking in the shaddows? Yep, post boxes. Now where they are going to erect them and when is another mistery altogether. Meanwhile I wait with baited breath them trying to put one on MY WALL. There'll be trouble, mark my words!

NEWS ON THE STREET

Elaine has had an operation to fix her hip, all is well as yet, she is well into her 80's so we don't expect her to return home for quite some time.

And... David has just told me that John (of John and Mavis) had a heart attack last week and was in Ag Nik hospital. I don't have an update but will make a few enquiries.

What with Lydia's arm, Gill's shoulder, David's back and my foot, it feels like we are all in some sort of 'injury' club. Well, GET WELL SOON, to everyone, we have serious partying to do in the next few weeks...

14th August is George's (Little Legs) Birthday, (What shall we do for that? Ideas on a postcard please).

SORRY NO TABLE TOP SALE FIRST SATURDAY IN AUGUST (you know why... something begining with 'C') the next one will be Saturday, 1st September, from 4 p.m. (Charity to be decided).

Oh, and it's the FULL MOON tonight, and if that means to you what it means to me...

H(a)...O(oo)...W...LLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLL

See ye'

WORDS OF THE DAY

Thought I'd better catch up on the 'word of the day' thing. With not being in the office I can't actually write in Greek, but I'm sure you will get the gist of it. So, here goes...

"Pou Pas;" (apart from the pees this is how the words look). Say, 'poo pas?'
It means: Where are you going?

Now you all know where I am going I'm sure, but just in case you don't...
read on...

CRUISE COUNTDOWN

3 DAYS TO GO AND COUNTING!

Tomorrow I get the results of my blood tests. So far the Brufen has helped but the farthest I have walked for a couple of days is on to the roof and back down to hang some washing out. I don't feel up to a cross country run, that's for sure.

I'm sorry there haven't been any photo's lately but you will be in for a treat very shortly.

The wonderful Pete paid us a visit today to measure up the house for fitted kitchen etc. He's literally on a flying visit and goes back to England tomorrow. He brought with him two English friends of his, Chris and Neil, who also have a house on the island, and we hit it off famously, they were great company and I'm sure we shall be getting together again soon. (Who's Pete? He's the other half of Cindy and Pete, who shall be moving to Crete very soon to take up residence in Vrahassi.) Hope you have a safe journey back, Pete, see you and Cindy very soon.

It's still very hot, I'm looking forward to a bit of sea breeze.

CRUISE COUNTDOWN

5 DAYS TO GO AND COUNTING!

All clothes are washed, ironed and hung up ready to be packed.

Last minute diet going well.

ACCIDENTS!

It seems to be one of those days. There has been an accident on the main road at the other side of the tunnel and the road is blocked. All traffic is being diverted through Vrahassi and that has caused all cars to come to a halt in the village. I have not seen the road but David tells me that all the honking and hooting is because of the two way traffic diversion bottleneck.

What a good thing that it happened after they took Elaine, our next door neighbour, (Elaine Diplorakis for those of you who know people in the village) away in the ambulance. She had a nasty fall whilst feeding her chickens. The first thing we knew was that Zouki, our dog, was looking through the gate. David went into the yard and saw Elaine in the street. I called George to get the ambulance right away then put pillows under her head and made sure she didn't move. David stood over her with an umbrella to keep the sun off her and I sat behind her to make sure she wasn't going anywhere. We talked to her till the ambulance came and got our other neighbour, Yannis, to come. George rang Elaine's son Yiorgos.

Our street is not the best of streets to wheel a stretcher up. One of the ambulance men was puffing so much when he arrived that he had to stop for breath. Anyway they managed to lift Elaine onto the trolley (how she stayed on it I'll never know, no straps or anything). She was in dreadful pain, I think her hip but don't know. Taking her down the street to the main road looked a very precarious job. She should be in Ag Nik hospital by now. Time to give up the chickens Elaine!

WHO WORKS IN JULY/AUGUST ANYWAY?

...and then there were two (and Little Legs of course).

The Birthday Party is finally over. Our lovely daughter and son Jack have gone back to England, (Jack protesting: "I don't want to go, Nannie,") which only brought more tears. But it was a lovely two weeks with my family even though I could not race around quite as normal.

David has made me rest the leg. Three whole days in the house with my feet up, a course of Brufen tablets and a Joanne Harris book (Gentlemen and Players) later, I have to admit that 'foot' (I'll say it in a whisper) does seem to be on the mend. And I'm not discounting the Reiki therapy which was sent by my friend and Reiki master, Margaret.

So, what happens next? Well, George seems to be in control of his little empire, the cafeneion. There is not much trade so he is OK. He did say that he was missing me nattering at him to do this and do that, but he may as well enjoy the peace because it won't last. Standards have to be maintained and it is my name on the shop. Poor Little Legs, he really would like an easy life and he is so at ease in the middle of chaos, litter, fag ends, unmade tables, piles of washing up, and, dare I say it...dirt.

Tut, tut, it wont do, it just wont do. Anyhow we'll call it his little holiday and he can have until the 10th August which is when I will start work again. And why, you are asking, am I not working until the 10th August. Well, David and I have decided to take a fabulous holiday. A holiday like we haven't had before, it will be the honeymoon we never had, a chance to recharge, rest and plan the future. We are to take a CRUISE.

Can you imagine how excited we are? Hence the absolute necessity to get 'foot' right and not to damage it further. So, I've a few more days rest before we pick up the boat in Heraklion for a week sailing around the Med. We shall call at Cyprus, Rhodes, Ephesus, Mikanos and Santorini before returning to Heraklion. How good is that!

Now, I don't want to be too insensitive here, and I know that Britain has been very 'wet' of late, so I'll say no more about the CRUISE, until... maybe, tomorrow.

So, what else is there to talk about? Today is the name day for all those people called 'Anna' so I must remember and say 'kronia polla' whenever I meet those ladies. Our neighbour at the bar in particular as she is such a good neighbour, especially when we ask her to move her cars for our music nights. Tomorrow is St Paraskevie day and the day after St Panteleimon. There are lots of festivities going on this week.

The main event will be tomorrow night in the school yard. The annual event of food, music and dancing. A real 'village do' hosted by the football club. There are posters all over the village showing the face of a famous lire player who will be playing together with his band. I have not missed this event since we came to Vrahassi, and George and I have danced, and danced, but I am afraid this year I shall be giving it a miss. I'll save my dancing feet for the c..... Oops, not going to mention that till tomorrow.

Hope you got home safely Heather, Mike and Manos, what a breath of fresh air you brought to the village. Thanks a million for the mags, they just came at the right time for me to read. Your dad brought them round for me Mike.

While I've been busy with the family George has had plenty of company under the shade of the pergola, and I am so glad that the villagers have not abandoned him all together. There is real comfort in seeing village men sitting, debating, whiling away the hours playing backgammon, it is the Vrahassi we came to and fell in love with. Sometimes I have been so wrapped up in future plans, especially with the Internet office etc that I have not had time for this leisurely pace, but now, standing back a little, I can see the sense of it. In the July and August heat, why do battle with commerce.

Finally I have realised that Little Legs philosophy of 'it's too hot to work' is sort of true. I would rather say, 'it's too hot to work hard.' I'm not to sure of the one which goes, 'It's too windy to work', or the one that goes, 'It's too cold to work', or the one that goes, 'It's too damp to work'. Different people, different philosophies, and if you think about it, both can be said to be 'right'. What do they say, 'if it works for you'. So, between the weather fluctuations, bank holidays, other holidays, and plain lazy days, George works (hours can be a problem but we'll not count those) and I natter, which amounts to a lot of nattering and not a lot of work, and that, in anybodies book 'don't seem right'.

So I'm going to do a lot of thinking while I'm away, (always a bit of a dangerous thing) and get my philosophies straightened out. One thing I know for sure is that when I come back 'come hail or high water' I shall be working 'HARD' because, no doubt I may just have developed a bit of a taste for 'CRUISING'. (Oh, I'm sorry it just slipped out).

'I am sailing, I am sailing, far away, 'cross the sea...dumpty-dum, dumpty-dum...' Feet up, glass of bubbly, I can almost feel the rock of the boat... smell the sea-air...touch the stars.

Dumpty-dum!

B A N GGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGG!

Get that ironing done Jane, get that letter to mum-in-law off thanking her for birthday card, also to Chris and Jeff for their (worth keeping for ever) birthday card, it was really lovely, answer e-mail to Nan and family, work on the novel, take a shower and don't waste the day!

BRIDLINGTON IS OFF

We had a long Skype link with our son David and his family this morning, it was wonderful. Our camera system, video link worked and we were able to see them in their house in England, doing last minute packing for their holidays at Bridlington.

Unfortunately they were not sure whether to set off or not due to the very bad weather conditions i.e. it is still raining! They were able to turn their camera to their TV, on which there was a reporter updating viewers on the latest flood conditions. It looked like the whole of the middle of England and south were under water. Motorways were blocked, high streets like canals, cars like sunken wrecks just visible above the water line. Am I so glad that I'm not there.

Our Bridlington holiday never materialised in favour of an English trip later in the year. We may have gone at the last minute if it hadn't been for my foot injury, which does not appear to be getting any better. Following a hospital visit yesterday, I have had blood tests which I have to pick up in 10 days' time and take to the Doctor. So now I'm thinking, what can it be? But I will be very surprised if it is not a torn ligament, tendon or something similar. The pain started when I was walking about 2 months' ago. I am resting. I am putting ice on it. I am taking Brufen. (prescribed at the hospital). What more can I do?

George is holding the fort, in fact he has total control of the fort. David is helping me in every way possible and having Jo, Jack and John here is a real 'Nannie Bonus'.

I have not been down to the office today and don't intend moving from the house. It's a bit awkward because I know that I have tons of work to do. I have quite a few properties on my books now and I want to sort out a site on the computer for them. Maybe I shall start a Property Blog.

The latest is a Bar and Jewelery shop in Sissi. I have to take photos tomorrow. Another piece of land has come to my notice and more houses in Vrahassi.

I do feel as though I've been a bit 'reserved' of late and I want to do something more in keeping with my true nature "I WANT TO DO SOMETHING TOTALLY CRAZY" but the bloody foot is stopping me. Anyway David and I do have a new project (or maybe several) so things are 'on the move', literally in fact, we are busy planning our new house and organising other work that is in the pipe.

It is our wedding anniversary soon, 3rd August, and I know David has something up his sleeve to surprise me but he's not telling. We have been together for 40 years (oh my God!) though it is not our 40th wedding anniversary until next year (so no rubies yet). I'd settle for a bottle of Champers by the sea side. Foot WILL be better by then.

Got to go now Dave wants the computer. Sorry no Word of the Day (I am sort of on holiday until the end of August (like most of Greece). If you want a word of advice, don't try visiting too many official offices etc in August, it is holiday season, it is very hot, and it is not easy to work. Brains fry a little and tempers fray, so take it easy with me and relax in the sunshine.

Byeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee!

P.S. Jane and David, it was so good to see you last night, and looking so well, it fair brightened my night. See you again soon.

IN DESPERATION!

Gavin and Rosemary, I know you will think I'm thick but I can't get my photos to attach to e-mail. I don't know why I've done it many times before. So just hoping that you read the blog soon, this is what your house looks like at the moment.

See you in September. Oh and I have made an appointment with an orthopedic chappie.

OUR HOUSE IS SOLD

OUR HOUSE HAS BEEN SOLD TO A LOVELY ENGLISH COUPLE FROM CHESHIRE, CINDY AND PETE. CONGRATULATIONS YOU TWO YOU HAVE YOURSELVES A FABULOUS OLD STONE HOUSE IN VRAHASSI.

Before you all ask 'where are you going to live?' there is no panick, as yet. Cindy and Pete have put a deposit on the house and it may be a couple of months' before they move out here. Meanwhile David and I are going to renovate our little one up, one down cottage just a little down the road so that we can move in to that while we do up the bigger house that we bought a couple of years ago, further up the mountain but still in Vrahassi.

It is all very exciting. Sure I am a little sad to leave this house because it has been our protector for 13 years, our neighbours are great, it is a quiet street, and the view from our roof terrace is 'katapliktiko' another Greek word for you - means 'fantastic'. But, onwards and upwards as they say.

Our first step now is to apply for electricity to the 'little house'. In fact David has just come in to say that the electrition will be coming tomorrow to make a plan for the electricity board. We have to have sevral photos of the house, the contract and a plan of where the electric will go. Once that is done and the application made there are several other steps to take before the electric is installed. I'll keep you up to date.

So, now I'm off to see our lovely family and have a sit by the pool. Crutches at the ready!

AND...
HAPPY BIRTHDAY FOR YESTERDAY MARK - hope you wore the tiara throughout!

NO BULSHIT BLOG!

BIRTHDAY BARBECUE FOR JANE AND MARK

It is Monday. I missed a whole day yesterday recovering from the night before. No I wasn't hung over, just very, very tired and my foot HURT so much. But it was a great night and there was lots of food and lots of dancing.

I really have to thank so many people for their help: first my daughter, Joanne, for helping me chop all those tomatoes, cucumbers, peppers and onions, (enough for 100 people). Second, Jerry (and hubby Graham) who helped to dish it all out. Then there was Lefteris, our neighbour, who ran about taking orders and serving the food and drink, of course George on barbecue duty.

But mainly I want to thank all those friends who turned up for the evening and brought dishes of this and that to help me out with the food. I seemed to be so busy that I didn't get chance to chat to many people. The band played on and the circle of dance wheeled throughout the evening. And at 2 a.m. when everybody had gone home, Pauline, my very good friend spent an hour helping David, George and me to clear all the mess away.

When we finally sat down to enjoy a most welcome Baileys, I put my leg up and realized that I hadn't done myself any favours by being on my feet so long. I had kept myself going with pain killers but now my foot really hurt.

And it has hurt ever since. David insisted that I didn't move from the house yesterday and today he has brought me Lee's crutches to use. I've had this problem with my foot for two months now and it ain't getting any better. I've promised that I won't be working the bar again until it is. The hospital told me it was a tendon and reading about it, I must admit, has put the spooks up me. I hate taking pain killers and I hate resting but I hate even more not being able to walk. If there is anyone out there with any advice I would appreciate it.

So...

WORD OF THE DAY

PONW (Say PO-NOW or PO-NO) either way it means I AM IN PAIN!

Anyway let's look on the bright side, at least I can use my hands which is more than my friend Gilly can do at the moment. Not without PAIN anyway, as she has her arm in a sling after a fall last week. Get well soon Gilly.

I just have to add that it was so good to see you Mavis and John and your daughter Sam who is such a ray of sunshine. Hope we get chance to chat next time.

EXCELLENT FOOD

This is becoming a habit! We dined out yet again last night and had another fantastic meal. This time we went to PARADOSIAKO a restaurant on the harbour in Sissi. We sat right on the edge of the sea, Jack, Jo, John, David and Mum, and we ate lamb. It was Kleftiko actually, which is a very Greek dish. It got it's name from the days when the Greek people were fighting the Turks. Bandits living in the mountains used to cook lamb, which they had stolen, over coals in a hole in the ground which they covered over and left for 24 hrs. There was no trace of the stolen lamb and no smell of cooking meat to give them away.

Our lamb was served in parcels of baking paper. Inside the parcel there was a huge chunk of lamb and potatoes, succulent and very tasty. The house red, we found extremely good and served at the right temperature.

It's muggy weather today, a bit overcast, a bit windy, very warm. We are going to take the family to Ag Nik this afternoon where they can go to the beach while Dave and I do the shopping for tomorrow. (Please don't let it rain on our Live Music Night/Birthday celebrations).

My second letter to the publication Dalesdoor2door, has been accepted. I am looking forward to getting down to writing again soon, my second novel which is in progress. My first novel is in an envelope waiting to be sent off to an Agent. That's on my list of things to do next week.

I am emptying draws daily in an attempt to make our move more tolerable. We shall take a small holiday soon and after that it will be back to building site living!

Greek class went well yesterday. Ina, a Dutch lady who has a house in the village, joined us. She is quite fluent in Greek and helped out with the class, asking questions of each student. My foot hurt and I was happy to sit back and relax a bit. I am going to look for some better shoes today.

OK, time almost up so...

WORD OF THE DAY

PARASKEVI (say, pah-rah-skev-EE) - FRIDAY, Friday

And all I can say is 'Whooppee, it's Friday' Of course, there is a Saint called Saint Paraskevi and she is the Saint that you pray to if you have any sort of eye problem. There is a lovely story about why this lady was sainted and I shall tell it to you later in between all the other stuff that's on my list. Byeeeeeeeeeee

10 JULY BIRTHDAY FUN

What on earth is going on in Vrahassi this morning. There must be every electric van on the street, cables, men up ladders, lots of noise and busing about, someone said something about cutting down trees but that may be another gang of men. Whatever it's very bustly. (George hasn't surfaced yet, he's missing it all).

Oops! Speak of the Devil, here he is with his morning coffee (it's five to eleven). What can I say? "Good morning." I'm not hung over so I'm sure he isn't. I'll go and have my elevensies with him.

Oh dear, George has made my chocolate with off milk so, not to offend him I've come back to the office saying that I will drink it while I work.

I had wonderful birthday celebrations over the past two days and again on Saturday. The day before yesterday I went out with the ladies and last night David, George, Joanne, Jack, John and I had a special dinner in Sissi. Once again we went to Mamma Mia's where the steak was the best we had tasted since we came to Crete 13 years' ago, that has to be good. Plus we treated ourselves to a good bottle of Red wine and after our meal, the wonderful Harris, who makes sure that the restaurant runs smoothly, presented me with a bottle of bubbly and Jack with a big chocolate ice cream (that Nannie had to help out with, of course). There was lots of singing of Happy Birthday to You with the Aegean waters gently lapping the rocks around the restaruant pier. The magical lights of Chersonissos twinkled along the coast making a perfect setting for the occasion. The only bad thing was that I forgot my camera, what a Nerd! Anyway here are some other photo's of yesterday.

FOOT CURED!

It feels like a miracle!

I got up this morning in exactly the same state of pain as I was in 2 months' ago. Hoping that one more day of rest would sort it. I took a bath and soaked my feet in hot water. I sat on the bed to dry my feet, took hold of 'poorly foot' and it went 'click', just like that, 'click'. For a minute I wondered, could that possibly be it. Dare I put my foot to the ground. But I did and the pain had gone. Just like that it had disappeared. I couldn't believe it. I had kept saying that the pain felt like I wanted to break my foot and release something, like the links of a chain that get out of synch.

Now, whether it was Bryan with his ultrasound treatment that I had yesterday, or whether it was the hot water soak, or maybe the two combined, I don't know, but the first thing I did (after I had thanked God and any Guardian Angel who had helped me)was to ring Bryan and tell him. Whatever he did yesterday I am sure played a big part in loosening up that which was stuck together. Thanks again Bryan!

I wont run about today, but I can tell you, I am so happy I could jump over the moon. And...

IT'S MY BIRTHDAY TOMORROW.

I hope as many of you as possible can come and celebrate my birthday on Saturday, at the bar where we have asked Costa and Dimitri back to play music for the evening from 8.30 onwards. It's Mark's birthday too so we are having a double celebration. Let's Party!

WORD OF THE DAY

AGIOS NIKOLOAS HOSPITAL

I didn't expect that!

About 9.30 p.m. last night George received a telephone call to say that his brother, Manolis, had had an accident in his motor and was seriously injured. It was all hands to. We scooted to Neapolis hospital where the ambulance service had said they were taking him, but after much confusion we found out that the ambulance had gone to Ag Nig. It was a silent ride there but fast, there was not much traffic so we had a clear road.

Manolis and Katerina had been driving back from Lassithi (it's a bad road at the best of times, very windy)when he had driven straight over the edge. Of course he was totally inebriated at the time. About 15 meters down the van came to a stop after rolling over and over. No seat belts. Katerina was remarkably unscathed but sadly Manolis was in a very sorry state when we arrived at the hospital. He had lost a lot of blood from a neck injury, his ear was in shreds and one eye mattered with blood. After the usual scans and blood tests he was taken to the operating theatre where surgeons worked for three hours to try to save his sight and patch him up. All the family arrived one by one (I have to say, a motley crew) and George kept it all together making sure he had every up to the minute information.

It was a bloody scene but the doctors were very efficient and worked very hard in the middle of the night. We left the hospital just after three, another silent journey home, and got to bed about 4 a.m.

So, today I had a lie in. It's 12 noon now and I am going down to the office in a minute. Today we have the Table Top Sale at 4 so I've time to sort things out before then.

Manolis is stable, so that's a good thing, the van is a right off.

You never know what the day is going to bring.

On a lighter note, I believe my article in the magazine door2door, which is distributed around Settle in North Yorkshire, has generated interest and I have been asked to write again for the August issue. I completed that yesterday to meet the deadline.

Plus I have now more houses to sell DIRECT FROM OWNER, so anyone interested do get in touch.

The deposit on our house is winging its way to us and I have begun to empty drawers and throw away all that stuff that you keep for years thinking it 'might come in'.
George's garden is more tomatoey than rosey but looking very healthy and ...

IT'S MY BIRTHDAY ON TUESDAY

4 ΜΕΡΕΣ ΚΑΙ ΜΕΤΡΩΝΤΑΣ

Τεσσερησ μερεσ και μετρώντας - Τη Τρίτι

HAPPY GRASS ON THE MOUNTAIN

STORM TROUPERS IN THE SKY - It all happened round Vrahassi yesterday! Groups of police on the ground and a helicopter search of the valley. I went to the office early because I had adverts to make for the Table Top Sale on Saturday (4 a.m.), then I had to get to the market for fresh vegies and other shopping, and I had to be back for the Greek class at two. All of that went smoothly. When I set off for Neapolis the old men were gathering on the edge of Vrahassi to watch the action. The helicopter made several sweeps and then disappeared. "George" the oracle, told me that they would be back at 10.30. Oh yeah! I thought, how come he knows everything. But sure enough dead on 10.30 the show began again. And how did he know that? "Because," he said, "the sun will be on the valley at 10.30, and that is when the happy plants look to the sky and are more visible." He was quite right. The result - the police found 550 canabis plants growing tall as trees on shepherd land between the olive groves. I haven't heard of any arrests, but then again I don't hear everything. It livened up the residents for half an hour or so and then the village was back to its sleepy self.

So, today will continue as normal, I've things to read and things to write and things to clean and things to cook. I've things to organise, things to throw away, things to photograph and things to find out. All those 'things' that make up a day. Have you made your 'Things to do today' list yet? That's the difference between me and Little Legs, 'things' are not important in his life. He gets up (at some time), opens the door (a bit later on) smokes a cigarette and drinks coffee (that brings him to mid-day) and if a customer comes he'll serve them (better if they are Greek and he can sit with them while they drink something, and even better if they want a game of backgammon). The plants take priority and always get watered (so I should be thankful for that) And the rest gets done (or not) at a point either before of after the afternoon siesta. Not one 'thing' on his list (who's right and who's wrong?). I'm the one with the 'got to get it done before we sit down' attitude. I don't have stress any more though, which is good and there is this new (disconcerting) harmony between us. Do you think it could be something to do with the pollen in the air, rising from the HAPPY GRASS in the valley below?

ULTRASOUND ON FOOT!

I was in so much pain with my foot last night that David suggested I ring Bryan the physio man to see what he could advice. No sooner said than done. 11 a.m. this morning there he was on my doorstep with his little black bag of tricks. Apparently it is a ligament problem (which, according to Bryan, I should have had treated weeks ago), I did think as much but you think that these things will just heal and that the pain is only temporary. Anyway he advised rest (of course), better shoes with some support and some more ultrasound treatment. When he'd gone I poured a Mataxa coke and joined George at a table on the edge of the mountain where I could watch his tomatoes grow and try to rest the foot. I have to get it better before Joanne and Jack come next week, I've Nannie things to do, sandcastles to build, games to play, dinners to make. I really don't have time to sit down with my leg up! But to be a bit sensible I have come home, away from Little Legs and the bar and I shall not be going back tonight. I've strapped the ankle as told for a few hours and David has gone shopping. Peace!

Of course it wont last but at this very minute it is like being alone in an Ashram. (What's an Ashram I can hear you say). Well it's a sort of meditation centre. There's plenty about it on Google.

Tomorrow is Greek class and I thought I'd do a bit of work for that. I have a pile of ironing but it's upstairs so that's out. I could sort out a couple of drawers (a bit energetic) or I could write an article or something (but I don't feel too inspired, yawn, yawn,). No I'll just put the old leg up and learn a bit of Greek.

7 days to go and counting. I haven't really got the hang of this but I think you should have the gist.

ATTITUDE

Somebody sent me a wonderful mathmatical e-mail today that said 'CHANGING YOUR ATTITUDE CAN CHANGE YOUR LIFE'. How true is that? If only it were so simple. I got to work at 11 a.m. OK some of you will think that is extremely late, but considering that I didn't finish work until way past midnight then I don't think an 11 a.m. start is too bad, and considering that I had hung the washing out, checked my e-mails and designed a plan for my new house before I left the house, then it is debateable at what time I actually started work. Anyway to cut a long story short, when I arrived at my office (below the cafebar) my lazy tw.. of a partner was still in bed. Not a good start to the day. So, for the next hour I cleaned the tables, washed the glasses from the night before, gathered all the rubbish and took it to the bin and cleaned the kitchen. Meanwhile, little legs dragged himself out of bed, caughed up all that tar that had settled on his lungs overnight, got himself a coffee and sat down. I put table cloths on the outside tables and dragged the sack of charcoal that had lain in the road since Saturday night's barbecue, out of sight and sat down with him. "Look", I said, "If you are not well, just tell me and I will arrange to open the bar myself." He said he wasn't well (probably too much Metaxa yesterday but I gave him the benefit of the doubt). "Shall I fetch you some aspirin?" I offered. That didn't work. Oh, to hell with it I thought and got on with my work in the office. Several House for Sale posters later Little Man was almost human and serving our first customers. It wasn't long however before he was playing backgammon with Yannis from next door. How many Greek women have you seen slaving over a hot stove whilst thier man plays backgammon? It is quite normal for them. I, however do not have to put up with it.

IT'S ALL A MATTER OF ATTITUDE. So from tomorrow if I come in at 12 noon I should avoid all that stress of Little Legs being in bed and nothing having been done to prepare for the day. I suppose the best attitude I could adopt would be that of a Sloth, i.e. 'Why do anything fast when you can do it slowly?' Or, better still, I could adopt a 'Little Legs' attitude, 'Why do anything at all when you can do nothing."

THIS ATTITUDE WOULD CERTAINLY CHANGE MY LIFE!

WORD OF THE DAY

ΣΙΓΑ-ΣΙΓΑ, σιγάρ-σιγάρ, (say, cigar-cigar) - LITTLE BY LITTLE, little by little. SLOWLY-SLOWLY, slowly-slowly.

If you are in the company of Cretan people and you never hear them say this then beware of impostors. It's not a bad philosophy just an extremely inefficient one.

WORD OF THE DAY

Word of the day is: ΠΟΥΛΩ, πουλώ (Say poo-low or poo-lauw, rhymes with 'cow')
MEANING: I SELL

This is a very important word for me today because I am awaiting a deposit on our house and as soon as we recieve it I will have another word of the day 'SOLD'. Fingers crossed all goes well.

KALO MINA JULY 1st

Into the early hours! Live Music in Vrahassi. We all had a 'fun' evening. And the next one will be on Saturday 14th July. But there will be music, food and dancing every Saturday from now on.

This is just the way I saw my musician's shack developing. Bring on the music!

Finally the wind has blown a few clouds inland and cooled us all down. I didn't see much of the morning as we were still cleaning up after Music Night number two until well past 3 a.m. Then David and I transported the musicians and their equipment back to Neapolis. Well, the equipment anyway, the wonderful twins, Mixalis and Stelios who had entertained us all night drove off in front of us on their little moped. Anyway, it was late by the time we got to bed, possibly 5 p.m. The wind was a life saver because we knew that it was too blowy to sit outside at the bar and that we would not have any customers this morning. I took the opportunity and stayed in bed till almost 12 noon, and so did George. We opened about 2 p.m. just in time to greet our first guest of the day.

Last night was another great success with many more tables filled with Greek people, which is very good for us as up to now they have been reluctant to use our little place. Maybe once they realize what a wonderful little spot we have they will come back.

Our entertainers played splendidly and we were able to eat, drink and dance to their programme of bouzouki music. As last time, the young musicians of Vrahassi were able to practice in front of an audience, and very good they were too. I think we should have a talent show evening, there is certainly hidden talent in these hills. I even managed a sneaky practice in front of the mike.
NEXT SATURDAY IS THE FIRST IN THE MONTH AND OUR 'TABLE TOP SALE' if you have any bits and pieces that you want to get rid of then bring them along. 4 p.m. at Jane Guevara's Revolution Bar. This Saturday will be in aid of the 'Flowers of Crete' fund and hopefully the new Calenders will be on sale.

Lassithi Motors Land in Vrahassi

It was like some sudden invasion from another planet. The outside world had come to Vrahassi! Like the circus coming to town there was great excitement as several big beasts of 4 x 4's drew up in the square. I, of course, could not remain in my seat as the representatives from Lassithi Motors gave out baseball hats as part of their promotion. Half an our later, after a short liquid refreshment stop, just enough time to wet the appetites of the shepherds who were milling around, they mounted their motors and convoyed out. I was told that the new ISUZU diesel 4 x 4 was a great motor for the shepherds (who will be the first to acquire one?).

Ben maybe?
