Yes, result. New door, new windows, posh or what! Now we've got work. Painting, cleaning, cupboard fixing. It's like moving house. I'm so relieved because I was getting very depressed about the whole thing. It's nearly Easter and now we shall be all done and dusted for the holiday.
Jo and Jack have arrived and the sun is shining. I've written the test for Greek Class today, just to copy it now. Dancing class tonight.
The bed (Jo said) was very comfy. My hovel is metamorphosing into a little palace - will I be able to adapt? (just try me). Will I want to sell the place when it's finished?
Choir went well yesterday we shall sing with the German Choir at the Rex on 11th April. Looking forward to that. Then there is the Cave concert at Milatos on 21st.
Got to get more posters out for the Anavlohos walks (see site http://anavlohos.com/) Will take Jo and Jack to the Monastery this week. Maybe up the mountain. It's a must to see all those wild flowers.
Better shoot now, things to do - Byeeeeeeee!

What no windows?
I'm rushing to get ready for dancing class. Just 5 minutes to report on situation concerning windows. It's 7.15 and no sign of any windows today.
BUT THE BED HAS ARRIVED - YIPPEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE!
(Can't sleep on it though cos I am going to make it up for Jo and Jack).
Choir practice in the morning at Ag Nik and then it's the big clean up before we go to the airport.
Have arranged for Margaret to come and give a demonstration of Reiki and Meditation at next Monday's Ladies Night, promises to be very good. Must go, byeeee!

Excuse me Sir there's a hair in my drink
Bull shit! If that's the best they can do for an excuse then it just shows where they're coming from. Yesterday one of our local chaps (yes a man) said, ''Jane, I feel sad not to come to your bar,'' then he sidled up close and lowered his voice, even though he was in my house and the walls are two feet thick, and said in a sort of whimpering way, '' You see, I am afraid that one of George's hairs will drop into my drink. Do you mind?'' ''Good God,'' I answered, '' of course I don't mind. But answer me this. Don't women have long hair, and doesn't that fall out from time to time? Don't you feel sad,'' I told him, ''you carry on going to the other bars where there's less risk.''
I will defend George's right to have long hair if he wants it. OK he is serving drink and he will tie it back when the tourist's come, but since when were Cretan farmers so fussy about things like that. The whole area is full of rubbish and rubble, the drains smell because there is no proper sewer system and all they can talk about is George's long hair. THAT'S SAD!
There, got that out of my system. Right it's nearly 12 o'clock. Last night's 'wine tasting' went very well it was good to get the old Tastevin out again. I've got till 1.30 and then I have to get myself to the bar for Greek Lessons. I'm hungry too, missed food yesterday because I was so busy. Well, did have a nibble of cheese and crackers with the wine. Anyway, I've begun the big clean up on the house ready for Jo and Jack coming. It must be done today.
Our 'permission' is through for the space across from the bar and we can start work on it.
'Hoorah!' Little legs will be busy for the next few days because, guess what, my windows are going to be put in today - maybe.
The next milestone is that I've got my ANAVLOHOS.COM site up and running. It needs a bit of work yet but at least it's a start. Try this; http://anavlohos.com/ Pretty neat eh? David helped a bit last night, for which I am very grateful. Unfortunately the bedroom is not finished and work has stopped for now. I've cleaned the tiles so we can use the room. Got to get on with a bit more work now so I'll let you know if the man comes to put the toilet in, if the bed arrives, if the windows appear, if George ever got out of bed this morning. It's a great day whether you are on holiday or live here.
3 days to go - not quite ready!
IT'S LADIES NIGHT at Jane Guevara'sLast week we had a really good evening watching Carol demonstrate her card making. Tonight it is my turn. I have chosen some really good wine to taste. The sash and tasting cup have come out of the drawer and hopefully we should have another good night.

Will the bedroom be finished! It don't bode well! Anyway work continues and I suppose that's a giant leap for Sharp-kind. As I write the tiles are being finished off in the bathroom. The bath never made it but we have enough funds for a toilet.
Be that an 'orb' on my picture. Maybe the Gods are with us after all. Our new bed will arrive tomorrow so marital status will remain 'Quo'. Maybe we should have a 'stroma part' (you know where money is thrown onto the bed for the newly 'to be' wed couple). Should we be having a second wedding, there seems to be a lot of money flying about at weddings? But then, why change the habit of a lifetime. Someone once said to me 'stop chasing money and it will start chasing you,' so come on filthy luka catch me if you can. (I've just twigged, I'm running to fast).

5 DAYS TO GO
Panic is not not the word. Despair could come into it. The house is still a building site though people keep saying 'we're getting there'. The whole place is a tip, dust knee deep, of course with every wish in the world the work will not be finished. David assures me that the bedroom will be finished by the time Jo and Jack come on Wednesday (it's Saturday) but the bathroom won't be, there you go! I've asked that the bed doesn't come today but the only time they can deliver after that is Wednesday so let's hope they do.
I took some posters out for the walks yesterday around Sissi, now I have to concentrate on getting the brochure done.
Still no windows in the office. Still no Internet connection.
I have to go and get some burgers for tonight, the bread has been ordered, music by DJ Lee and dancing (hopefully everyone).
Let's get all my problems into perspective. On Saturday my sons's mother in law died. She had been ill for many years. I didn't know her so well but I do know that she thought the world of her (and my) grandchildren. She was the Gran on the spot, the one who brought little treats, the one who helped the family, the one who was there to give that love. I'm not in England, not on hand to give a hug and it sometimes hurts, but that doesn't stop me loving and giving. I am thinking of my family now and I know that the next few days are going to be difficult to get through. I know that when my mum died people said "is there anything I can do?" well there isn't because all you want is for her to be there again and that's impossible. I'd be happy to know that she was in Australia, the moon, anywhere, with the chance of being able to give her a hug and say 'I love you mum'. So I know how Tracy is feeling right now.

No bloody windows/No bloody internet
Just a very quickie cos I'm hiving up the mountain again at 10. I'm so angry with the system here. Lies, lies and more lies. Manolis (landlord) came to the bar last week and said Wed/Thurs he would come to fix the windows. I thought OK that means Friday. Anyway I rang him yesterday cos nothing happened and he said MAYBE Monday. MAYBE I said Thanks and put the phone down. Computer man came to fix internet which is apparently ready to switch on but a cock up in the OTE office means nothing has happened and wont for a few days more.

Mother's Day
HAPPY MOTHER'S DAY - I'm thinking of my kids, I'm thinking of my grandkids, and I'm thinking about all those times when we had flowers on Mothering Sunday. It seems to have gone out of the window a bit because the Greek Mother's day is not on the same day. Anyway, I think it's better to make a phone call than send a card so I'm going to make some time today to ring David's mum and to talk to my family. I'll send a bunch of words instead of flowers.
I've managed to persuade David to take a day off and me too. We were late in the bar last night, about 2 p.m. and a great night, good company, music, a mix of Greek and English. I had put a strip of flashing light up in the bar and it makes it more of a bar if you know what I mean. I've also sorted out the bottles of booze so that there is a better display - the woman's touch!
So, today we are off to Thrapsano to look at some pottery - I hope the place is open. If not it will be a run out. I've had this idea for the bathroom (I could hear David groan), but I think it will be different and look good. I chose the tiles the other day. Just the bath, taps, mirrors and stuff now.
Oh and a bed (well a bedroom has to have a bed, eh!).
I had my hair cut on Friday, Colin from Sissi came to the bar and did it there. It's brilliant! I really needed a good cut. Thanks, Colin.
George is off doing the olives again today so the bar will be closed till this afternoon. My Internet connection is on and will be up and running on Monday, the doors and windows are promised for Thursday. Yippee! Our license is being processed, money paid and should come through in about a week. It's all coming together. Just ready for Lydia's party. The sun is shining and though it isn't warm it is very pleasant. Spring flowers are out, birds are singing.
Breakfast calls - yogurt and honey, yummy, yummy! By for now.

Birthday Cards!
Carol will be at the bar on Monday night to demonstrate how to make Birthday Cards, so come on ladies it promises to be an informative (and jolly) night. See you, Jane.
Forthcoming events: Wine Tasting. To get to know some interesting Cretan Wines. In a past life I became a Chevalier du Tastevin and went to school in France to learn how to gauge a good wine. I shall choose three or four bottles of Cretan wine and we shall taste them and learn about the qualities of an excellent vintage.
24th March - Rock Music Night. Eating, drinking, dancing and listening to all your favourite rock music. Genesis, Pink Floyd, Guns and Roses, Kiss, Black Sabbath, Dire Straits... all of them, come and have a bash before the season starts.

The other two are to the Monastery of St George across the olive groves along the old donkey tracks and a History of Vrahassi walk which takes in the windmills, churches, fountains and all those interesting nooks and crannies of the village.
Come and join me

Happy Bar!

Here's a happier picture. The bar on Saturday night, music night.
On Sunday night Dave and I went to Ag Nik to listen to a jazz trio. Fantastic double bass player, piano and singer. I wish they could play at Jane Guevara's - who knows, one day they might.
Meantime, come on all you artists out there. Every Saturday night is music night.
Parking in Vrahassi

Now I know parking is a problem, but isn't this taking it a bit too far?
So here's the story. Two people in the village say they own this property. Dispute. Discord. 'Drenalin rush and what do you get? A tractor backed through the front door. Bang! It happened about 5 p.m. It's now 11 and the tractor is still there. No sign of a policeman, or any other man for that matter. We'll see what happens tomorrow.
It's Wednesday!
Not a lot to say today, rushing to get ready for choir practice. Going after for coffee with a couple of friends, (well chocolate as I haven't drunk coffee for years). Later off shopping and then back to the bar. It's very cold, damp and gray, has been for a couple of days, brrrh! woolies out.
Work continues in the bedroom to be. Saw dust everywhere.
Better go, will report later. Byeeeeeeeee!

Live Music at Jane Guevara's Revolution Bar
If Saturday nights continue to be this good then I won't complain. It has nothing to do with the takings. Everyone in the bar was happy and that's what it's all about. We jammed! Oh yeah mama! Live music with guitar, keyboard and mainly yourselves. The oldies keep coming out don't they? Songs that is. The Eagles, Hotel California, Beatles, Status Quo, Pete could strum 'em all. When you're enjoying playing maracas it doesn't seem to matter if only one rattles! Out came the bongo drums (George), out came the tambourine and we made music. Great fun.
Who will come to make music next week? Saturday night is Jam night. The accordion remains unplayed, oh, where are my old Bier Keller mates, bring out the old lederhosen.
I'm not going down to the bar till about 2 today, maybe George will be up by then. He's not doing the olives today. In fact he may not be doing any more because the 15 bags he had in the factory seem to have gone missing. Now they may just have been pressed in his absence or they may have been half inched. I do hope that is not the case because little man has worked so hard.
Still no windows in the office.
The sofa is back. Now the bar feels better. The comfort zone has returned, ready and waiting for all those familiar bums. (If you know what I mean).
Better get on now, David busy in the back, house building. I will have a busy week choosing tiles, a bath, bedroom furniture. Only two weeks' to go. It's looking like it won't come to divorce after all. Yeah, yeah, yeah - All you need is love!

Honestly I wasn't speeding!
Rollocks! I was pulled by the politz-eye! I was in really good time for choir practice at Ag Nig, and a really good mood too. How a single wave of a man in uniform can change things. I should have just waved back but being a good law abiding citizen I pulled in and said politely, Kali mera. That was mistake number two because I may have been better just to speak English, who knows. Anyway, it had slipped my mind to have the old motor tested in December so I got a fine of 167 euros which I don't have to pay as long as I get it done before May 15th.
Then God smiled and whilst at the 'Friends Meeting' on Thursday at Neapolis, after relating my story, I was told about the bang spanking new Test Centre just out of town. The owner just happened to be sitting at the next table (there is no such thing as chance) and he told me that although they were not fully open yet if I went directly then his chaps would test the motor and tell me what needed doing to it, then in a few week's time when his 'Permission' papers were all in order and the work on my wonderful mud splattered work horse had been done, he would issue the test certificate for me. Good or what!
I did exactly that and can recommend the new test centre which, if you want to take your car, is just out of Neapolis on the road to Kourounes. Take the road out as if you are going to Ag Nik but don't turn off, go over the bridge a little and first right. Carry on right, up the hill, past the panel beating shop and as the road sweeps left turn of left and you will be directed into the Test Station. It's a great location overlooking the mountains and has a very pleasant coffee shop with huge flat screen telly. The price, obviously for me because I was overdue three months, will be 78 euros but normally the charge is the same as elsewhere, I think they said 36 euros or there about. The staff were all very pleasant and the guy who put my motor through its paces sat down with me and went through the computer printout which told exactly the criteria of pass and fail. He spoke very good English so no problem there.
George is still olive picking and seemingly enjoying it. It means that I have to watch the bar but there's no stress there. I shall go down about 10 today so that I catch the 'wine man'. He brings very good bulk wine from a vineyard near Heraklion and I don't want to miss him. I shall clean up the place, get a stew going in the pot and do my piano practice.
That's me, byeeeeeeeee!

International Women's Day
I do believe it is International Women's Day. So what can I do special today? Well I have to hang the washing out, I have to wash the pots, I have to do at least a bit of hoovering and I suppose I should make the bed, all things that seem to be a woman's lot, that is not to mentions picking up the dirty socks and things that him outdoors has left lying about. (In my case, them outdoors).
But what can I do for International Women's Day? I put the question to Dave. "I've absolutely no idea," he said. (With the tone in his voice that he never knows what to expect from me next). I think it should be something bold like calling an extraordinary board meeting to discuss women's problems, but then, I'd rather do something less depressing. Maybe I should just have an 'off' day and let the men in my life wash my socks and cook my dinner, but oh, the mess they make in the kitchen.
No, it needs something with a bit more action. I could stretch out a friendly hand to those women who are less fortunate than me. The one who was stabbed in the stomach by her drunken 'live in' but said it was her fault. Or the one who thinks that her 'live in' will be so busy working in the summer that he will not have time to drink. All those out there who are doing silly things in the name of love and because of fear can't stand up for themselves. It's a learning curve I suppose but some seem to keep going round in circles.
It's all very nice and maternal to do homely things, and it is the most wonderful thing to love somebody to the extent that you would do anything for them. But in the doing of all those things my message to women out there is, DON'T LOSE YOURSELF ON THE WAY. We are all individuals, men and women, and should respect that fact. So, if you want to get out there and do a bit of hang gliding, DO IT. Don't be afraid of doing it alone. You might just find that you enjoy it, you'll be a happier person for it, and your wonderful man will love you all the more because of it. (He'll think, I live with a woman to ride the rapids with and life will be much more exciting). It workes for me!
So, I'm off to climb another mountain. See you at the top!

But what can I do for International Women's Day? I put the question to Dave. "I've absolutely no idea," he said. (With the tone in his voice that he never knows what to expect from me next). All I want is the truth!
LIES! LIES! LIES!
What is it with Cretan people that they can't tell it straight. When I took the bar the landlord said he would put new doors and windows in. When? Certainly by the end of the month, January. Then it got to, by the 15th February, then it got to by March 1st. Last week I thought I'd pinned him down when he said Saturday but most probably Monday and, after waiting all day yesterday, I rang him and was very angry to hear it may be another week or two. Does that mean this month or never. I WANT TO OPEN MY OFFICE.
I have decided to put the computers in the bar and work from there, also I am not going to pay rent on the office until I can move in to it. He hasn't been for the rent and I think he knows better than to turn up. The papers that we are waiting for him to produce so that I can get the proper insurance certificate have also been coming for the past few weeks. Maybe today - who knows?
I had to miss choir and my piano lesson yesterday because I didn't have a vehicle as David and George were doing the olives. Well George was but David is running him about and the generator had conked. They went to get it mended and that took half a day.
Ladies night went great. Colin came to demo hair cutting and we all asked questions about our hair and stuff. Next week we are doing a 'crawl' of Vrahassi followed by a Pea and Pie supper at Jane Guevara's Revolution Bar. The week after we are going to have a Wine Tasting evening. I'd better get some practise in.
Today I'm off to the Electricity Board in Ag Nik to get some papers for David and have to go to the Council Offices in Vrahassi to ask permission to connect up to the water supply. (Better do things legit.). I shall get some office supplies and hope that things get going soon.
Greek Lessons as normal at 2.00 p.m. today.
Not long to Joanne and Jack coming now - where are we going to sleep!

1 Year On - VN Day (Victory over Neapolis)
Seems like George and I were the only people to celebrate VN Day. Oh well, there you go!
We hung a banner from the bar with a couple of Greek flags. There was no comment from villagers, no-one came in for coffee so no-one saw the exhibition of photographs which I have put up across one wall of the bar. It shows the fight, demonstrations and celebrations. I've loads more photo's but it is very expensive to reproduce them so most will have to remain my personal collection. Eventually I shall have them on disc.
Getting new windows and a new door for my office is begining to look like the wait for my bedroom. I rang Manolis (landlord) and asked just when he was going to do the work. "Saturday," he announced. "But you said Thursday," I replied, "my computers are coming on Saturday, will it be morning, afternoon or evening," I said, trying to pin him down. "Or Monday," he continued. "So it will be Monday," I asked. "I'll try for Saturday but it may be Monday," he repeated. "OK," I sighed.
So, my computers will come today but I shall have to keep them covered up because of the work on Monday, hopefully!
Meanwhile, Big Mike has done a splendid job of putting up a wood partition to hide the sink area and make the room more officey, and I now have book shelves at the ready.
Honestly, George has worked so hard in the olive groves over the past few days that David has gone to help him today. It just shows that when back is to the wall, little man can really work. Will he ever forgive me for all the comments I have made about him sleeping? It is really quite nice to have two men working to keep me in the manner to which I am accustomed. (Don't forget though, I am not such a demanding woman, 12 years with an outside loo and no bedroom). It must be love!
The picture above was taked one year ago when the whole village was celebrating. Our new council has been in operation for two months and we await action. I am told that the first money will be released after 3 months so we shall see what May brings.
Quiz night went well last night. Music night tonight, come on all you musicians, where are you?
