Nostalgia in Vrahassi

I so appreciate Nostalgia cafe bar in Vrahassi. I can sit in in comfortable surroundings, eat Kiria Anna's fantastic food, practice my Greek, and work. It doesn't get much better. I always think of what I should have said on the video, after the event. But here you can share a flavour of my evening in Vrahassi. Today I'm going to Neapolis so I will be reporting from there. Oh, and just to say, I was up till after midnight last night making sure I accomplished the goal I had set for the day. Books don't write themselves you know! Skyrocketing Unemployment in Greece.

Skyrocketing unemployment, around 27 percent, has led to hundreds of thousands of households and businesses not being able to make good on their financial obligations. 

Number of indebted households turning to courts for a settlement with banks skyrockets According to the latest available data, the percentage of loans that were not being serviced reached 27.8 percent in March, amounting to 64 billion euros, from a total of 228 billion euros owed to all Greek banks in business, mortgage and consumer loans over the same period. By Evgenia Tzortzi Some 80,000 applications have flooded Greece’s justice of the peace courts in the past six months from individuals seeking to ease the terms of their bank loans, with court officials saying that they are assigning hearing dates all the way up to 2025 to deal with the workload. The number of people trying to restructure their debts as they struggle with the crisis and increasing taxation demands has doubled in comparison to the start of 2013 and is growing proportionally to rising unemployment rates, even though the country’s banks have already reached restructuring agreements with over 800,000 debt holders. The justice of the peace courts, meanwhile, have already heard 7,600 applications, rejecting 35 percent and sending the other 65 percent to trial. According to Iakovos Venieris, a lecturer at Athens University’s Law School, the fact that an application is accepted by a justice of the peace court does not mean that a settlement will be reached between the borrower and the lender. It simply means that the court accepts that the borrower meets the requirements of Law 3869/2010 – colloquially known as the “Katseli Law” after the lawmaker who drafted it, Louka Katseli – which is designed to help indebted households compel banks to restructure their loans according to their new financial circumstances. Venieris says that a cursory glance at the decisions issued by Greek courts on debt-restructuring cases reveals that the average reduction of debt granted to applicants is around 35 percent, and while there have been a few rulings whereby individuals have seen their debt written off almost entirely, at 0.4 percent the number is too small to really matter. Skyrocketing unemployment, around 27 percent, has led to hundreds of thousands of households and businesses not being able to make good on their financial obligations. The circumstances that led to households stopping their debt repayments are one of the factors that are closely studied by justice of the peace courts, along with their overall financial profile and assets. According to the latest available data, the percentage of loans that were not being serviced reached 27.8 percent in March, amounting to 64 billion euros, from a total of 228 billion euros owed to all Greek banks in business, mortgage and consumer loans over the same period. Data from the banks suggest that the number of settlements made so far cover 800,000 loans, many of which have been restructured more than once and some of which have been classified as nonperforming. According to the data compiled for the last evaluation of the Greek economy, banks have restructured some 6 percent of their total loan portfolios. This represents 13 billion euros’ worth of debts, 45 percent of which is in the form of business loans, while at the same time write-offs account for 4 billion euros, shooting the total amount owed in problematic loans close to 100 billion euros. Bank data show that by the end of 2012, of the total 1.1 million mortgage loans issued by Greek banks, some 300,000 presented problems in their servicing, while those that are paid regularly dropped from 960,000 in 2011 to 850,000 the following year. One in four mortgage loans were classified as nonperforming in 2012, while consumer loans where installments were delayed for more than three months rose to 710,000 in 2012 from 540,000 the previous year. The picture for the consumer credit market, meanwhile, shows that one in 2.5 consumer loans are on shaky ground and that the number of those that are serviced regularly dropped from 2 million at the end of 2011 to 1.7 million at the end of the following year. Likewise, one in five credit cards has two months of overdue payments, while those that have not been paid for three months rose from 465,000 to 610,000 from late 2011 to late 2012. As far as the number of loan and credit card holders who faced legal action is concerned, this shot up in the period from 2005 to 2012, reaching 1.5 million from 400,000. More specifically, the number of bad loans reached 620,000 in 2012 from 180,000 in 2005 and the number of credit cards shot up to 880,000 compared to 220,000 in 2005. A look at the applications submitted by troubled borrowers reveals that one in three has absolutely no assets whatsoever and just two in three have assets (including those with mortgages). This suggests that the debts arise mainly from consumer and business loans without collateral rather than mortgage loans. Nevertheless, an increasing number of applicants are seeking easier repayment terms even though banks are not entitled to seize their incomes to pay off their debts. Moreover, the flow of applications for the Katseli Law to be invoked does not appear to have been stemmed by a recent regulation that forces applicants to pay at least 10 percent of the amount due according to their last notification. It is worth noting that the law also allows recourse for professionals who are no longer in business, a recent development that has exponentially increased the number of applicants.

The above article highlights the massive problems that the Greek people are encountering at the moment. 228 billion euros' worth of debt, 27% unemployment, and a big 'no hope' mentality. 

Where do they go from here?

I don't have any answers. I can only show people how to better themselves by becoming empowered. Whatever business you are in, by learning a proven marketing system, you can position yourself to attract success.

A Box Full of Cretan Memories

I have only been back in London one day, and already miss Vrahassi. I think it is good, though, to leave the past behind, and move forward into the future. However, by keeping memories within reach, it is possible to open up that box of yesterday, and experience the music and the air of history. Breathe that air with me now as you watch this video, which is a little window on times past.



And looking to the future, I am already planning my return to Vrahassi in November. The pull of Crete is so powerful that I know my destiny is intertwined with the island.

Before I left, I went to the little museum in Vrahassi, and gave them a few copies of my book, 'A Short History of Vrahassi.' I have had it translated into Greek, and one day I will publish it and make it available.

Here in England, I have my Greek music to keep me happy while I create a plan to enable me to fulfill my mission. That mission is to work hard and build my business, so that I can spend more time in Crete, and collect a big box full of Cretan memories.

So, to the future, folks, enough of this nostalgia for one day, I've got things to do, places to go, and a cello that is crying out to be played.

Tomorrow, I'll dip into my memory box and bring you more pictures of Vrahassi.

Crete in September

Agios Nikolaos in the sunshine, a cruise ship towering above the harbour, people milling about enjoying their lives, and enjoying all the flavours of the Mediterranean. What a great moment in time!



Sorry about the sound quality, but there was a lot going on in Agios Nikolaos yesterday.
I shot this video, while I was waiting for my friend, Pauline. When she turned up, we went on a mission to buy me a new dress. I wanted something special to take to Washington in October. Well, I knew just where to go. There is this shop in Agios Nikolaos, that has the most fabulous clothes. Clothes that I have always thought, Jane, when you have the means, you will buy a dress from that shop. And that is what happened. I found just the number.

So, tomorrow, David and I are heading back to London to attend the Empower Network seminar. On Friday evening we shall meet our American friends, socially, and on Saturday, we shall be brainstorming and learning about the exciting ENV2 mobile blogging platform.

Crete in September has been very magical for us. We have had a wonderful break, and now it is time to get back to London, and up the pace a bit. It is easy to do that, knowing that we are going to return to this beautiful island in November, to spend another few weeks of Mediterranean life.

I will fill in the gap by posting some of the pictures that I have not had time to put up on the blog. So please keep logging in to see what is new from Crete. And follow my progress in building my team of Greek internet marketers. This is my new passion, this is my new mission, to lead as many people as I can to the lifestyle that they dream about having.

Gunshot in Vrahassi

It's a little unnerving to hear gunshot, wherever you are, but it is not so unusual in Vrahassi. In fact nobody bat an eyelid when the first three cracks rang out. It could have been murder, someone shooting his dog, a happy raki burst, a funeral or a wedding. In this case it was a wedding, being held in the middle of the village, at one of the small churches. We didn't see any sign of the bride and groom, or hear anything but the gun fire. Otherwise it was a very lazy Sunday afternoon in Vrahassi.



Earlier in the day David and I went to see some friends in Kritsa, another colourful place.

There are still a few women sitting in the shadows with their crochet. This statue typifies the industrious ladies of Kritsa.

And today I am tripping off to Agios Nikolaos, to pay the electricity bill, and to meet my friend, Pauline.

Our little holiday is almost at an end, but the good news is that we shall return in November, when we shall be giving a business presentation of Empower Network, in Heraklion. AND THAT IS VERY EXCITING!

A Walk Through the Streets of Vrahassi

Hello Blog Readers,

As promised here is a video shot yesterday as I walked through the streets of Vrahassi. There wasn't much going on, maybe because it was 1 p.m. and I missed the morning rush hour, but I think you can get a flavour of the place. The temperature is about 28 at the moment, and it's a bit cool to sit out in the evening, but very pleasant if you have a jacket.




Vrahassi has a wonderful charm to it even though there are lots of old buildings that have been left to
crumble. It is a bit like living in the middle of an archaeological site, but all the more interesting for that. The narrow streets are wonderful to explore, and it is not difficult to imagine how life once was when the village was a thriving center of industry: weavers, carpenters, butchers, lots of coffee shops, a post office, and a host of other trades. Now, time has moved on, and we are left with one village shop and a museum. Even so, this is such a special place to visit. You should definitely put it on your list if you are coming to Crete.

As you can see in my video, there is a wonderful internet connection in Vrahassi, and most of the young kids have a computer. It is a strange mix of ancient and modern.

Last night, David and I went down into the square for a glass of wine and food at one of the tavernas. It was a pleasant experience; we talked to a few locals and enjoyed the company. Then it was back home and back to work. In fact, because of the time difference in America, David and I were up at 3 a.m. to listen to the co-owner of Empower Network, on the internet. He was outlining details of the launch of our new product, the ENV2 blogging platform. This is cutting edge technology that will revolutionize blogging, and give every business an edge in the market place, whatever that business is. We are very excited about being able to promote it. The Secret is Out

And no sooner am I in Crete, than I am whisked away for a romantic weekend at a secret location. But I can't keep the secret.  I have to share it. We went to Tsoutsouros, on the south coast. 

 We stayed at the Edelweiss hotel which was right on the beach. It is run by a lovely family who were always there to serve drinks and see that we were comfortable.

Of course we were straight on to the beach, not before we had checked our e-mails though. The wifi in the hotel came in very useful.

 It's such tiring work, relaxing in the sunshine!

 But we did stretch out legs a little on the hillside. We took the ancient Minoan path up the cliff side, but didn't go all the way to the next village. It was not far, but David's leg is not 100% after his fall last week.

 I call these big rocks, watchers, because they seem to stand sentinel in high places.

 We got in sight of the next village, but decided to turn around there. The lure of a cool beer made the journey back seem very easy.

 Those clouds got very dark, and eventually it began to thunder and lighten. By that time we were safe inside a little bar, with a bottle of Corona each, and a bowl of crisps. (Very unhealthy).

 Tsoutsouros is not very big, as you can see, and a bit concrete-y, but there is a small harbour, a fishing boats were coming and going all day.









Before we headed for home, we went to the ancient Greek site of Priansos, which was one of the 31 cities of the Cretan League. Now there is very little left except this large building. It is supposed to date about 100 b.c.

So, after our little history lesson, we headed back to Vrahassi, via the hinterland of Crete. It was a great little weekend, and today I have been working all day, a bit of housework, and a lot of computer work.

I have managed to make a little movie of the weekend, and I have been on the street in Vrahassi with my camera. So, tomorrow, I will be reporting from Vrahassi.

But now it is time for me to close the computer before it gets so hot that it closes itself down. It isn't the temperature in the house, you understand, it is because it has been running since 9 a.m. this morning.

Bail of 10,000 Set for Murder Suspect

18 Year Old From Sissi, Released on Bail of 10,000 euros.

The 18 year old boy from Sissi, who was together with two other young men, one from Neapolis, and one from Agios Nikolaos, on the night they brutally murdered an old man in Amigdali, has been released on bail of 10,000 euros

.

He told the prosecutor that he was drunk, and that he was driving the car, the other two asked him to stop in Amigdali  saying they had a job to do. He claimed that he stayed in the car and waited. When the two returned to the car they had blood on their hands, and he says that is when he learned of the crime. He denied having any involvement in the murder.

The 18 year old is restricted from leaving the country, and must appear twice a month at court. Bail was set at 10,000 euros. The other two are up at court on Thursday.

I thought you might like a follow up to what is happening in the murder case which I reported in my previous blog.

I gather there was an almighty mother of a storm in Vrahassi last night. I hope you kept your roofs on! Anyway, now all that is out of the way, and the full moon on the 19th, I recon it will be sunshine all the way for the next two weeks. Yippee! Break out the sun bed, David.

Come Back to Reality  by Kostas Kallergis "I won't commit suicide. I'm not crazy. I'm going to eliminate one of you" said a desperate middle-aged man to Greek Health Minister, Adonis Georgiades during the latter's visit to the Thessaloniki International Fair. The Minister is giving him an advise. "Calm down. Come back to reality. Problems do not get solved in one day". And Rome wasn't built in one but that's irrelevant. The man had used his life savings to buy Greek bonds which have recently been severely cut because of the Greek "haircut". Thousands like him are desperate, having trusted their life savings to a betraying State that is now calming them down and calls them back to reality. Blend despair with injustice and you have anger. Some other thousands have been less angry, they have only been desperate. Extremely desperate. Fresh reports quantitatively show a dramatic rise in suicides. The Greek Statistical Authority announced that suicides have gone up in 2011 - 26,5% compared to 2010 and 43% compared to 2007, the year before the Greek crisis broke out. At the same time, NGO Klimaka, that deals with suicides and runs a 24-hour hotline, added that the actual number of suicides is much higher than this. According to an EU-wide study researching data for the period 1970-2007, every 1% of rise in unemployment results in a 0,79% rise in suicides. The projection is geometric. If unemployment rises by 3%, suicides rise as a result by 4,45%. Unemployment in Greece was below 10% before the crisis. It is now about to reach 30% without any visible prospect of recovery on the ground. Now do the math. To all my friends in Greece, and around the world, 

You may wonder what these posts have to do with Vrahassi. but you see, I have a mission, and that is to let people know that here is a way to earn money, and be your own boss, and be involved with a great circle of people throughout the world.

David, as you know, has been working online, part-time, in between his building work in Crete. And last year, I joined him in Empower Network. We went to a convention in Denver in August, and more recently got together with the leaders at a meeting in London.

We love the work, I am making a series of 30 videos to chart my progress in the company, and also to show you what we do. David is the one who sends out ads, and he also writes blogs and makes videos. I think he's a natural at it. The point is, if we can do it, anyone can do it. Our work is writing blogs, and teaching others how to market their product. Could you do that? I'm sure you could.

Anyway, I'm rambling on. Take a look at the videos below. If nothing else, you will see what we are doing here in London.

Vrahassi is calling me, and I shall be over there before the month is out. I love Vrahassi, but I didn't like being poor. So I did something about it. Jane on the Move

Hi everyone, here I am, in the pink, heading back to England and my work. The journey, via EasyJet, was great, on time, and within a few hours from this picture being taken I was snug in my little flat. Of course it was a sad parting, but then, partings usually are.
Did I tell you that I received a cheque from Amazon,  for the sales of my book, how wonderful is that? So with new enthusiasm I am pushing forward with my writing.
My next mission is to find a music teacher, and continue with my cello studies. And in between all that I am developing a business in Network Marketing. It is an ideal job for someone like me who doesn't want the restrictions of going out to work. If I can make money from home I'm happy. I have chosen to follow David with a company called Empower Network, it is full of lively people, and I like that. It is not for everyone, but it suits me, and I am not ready to settle into old age. Life is far too exciting for that. If you feel the same way, take a look at my Empower Network blog, and find out what it's all about.

Tomorrow I shall visit my choir mistress for a spot of singing, Friday it is lunch with my daughter, Joanne, Saturday is, well, the weekend, and anything can happen then - I have a hankering to go and see the new Star Trek movie. Sunday is church and family, remind me to tell you how I became involved with the church in Beckenham, it's another story!

So, while David works away in the Cretan sunshine, I am working away in the Kent sunshine. My window is wide open, the birds are singing, there is a faint chatter of children's voices from a school playground somewhere behind the trees, and all is well in the world of Jane.

And here is a little follow up to what happened in Crete a few year's ago. That poor man in a coma for all those years. A little prayer for him, I think, and the people who are caring for him.

Six years after police were ambushed in a rural area of Crete during a drug raid, a five-judge Piraeus court handed down sentences of between 25 and six years to 16 men found guilty of involvement in the attack in Zoniana, a rural area in Rethymno. One of the officers was seriously wounded.

The court gave two men, one of whom is an Albanian national and remains at large, the maximum sentence of 25 years for the attempted murder – among other charges – of 33-year-old special officer Stathis Lazaridis, who remains in a coma five-and-a-half years after gunmen in the lawless village opened fire on 49 police officers conducting a raid in search of illegal narcotics, for which the area is notorious.

Another two officers were injured in the gun battle. The court also handed sentences of 10 years to another three men and five-and-a-half years to another 10. The 16th defendant saw his sentence reduced to four years.

Hello everyone,

Well, I'm back from sunny Crete, to sunny London. Spring, it seems, has sprung everywhere. The blossom is out, and I've returned with that wonderful, enthusiastic feeling that always comes along after the long, cold nights of winter.

And what, you may be asking, is she up to now? So, here it is, my new enterprise. Laugh if you like. Have a little jeer, but those of you in the know might find, like I have, this wonderful opportunity to make some money. Anyway, this is what I am up to. Oh, and playing my cello, and singing, and writing my second novel, and keeping company with my grandson, and... and... and... life is so wonderful.

Crete has given me the energy, now it's time to trade it in for a bit of action. And you know what? Hey presto! ENERGY + ACTION = MONEY
